    Okhotny Ryad

The place of construction of the shopping center was chosen by the Moscow Government, which planned that a large shopping center would attract tourists. The first project for the construction of the Okhotny Ryad shopping center was developed by Boris Ulkin, who proposed the idea of a 7-level complex that goes underground to a depth of 38 meters. Ulkin wanted to place an architectural museum, a historical theater, a children’s play center, an art salon, a movie and video hall, restaurants, shops, banks and offices on 120 thousand m², and parking for 450 cars was provided on the two lower levels of the complex. In the process of project implementation, it became clear that in order to accelerate the return on investment, it was necessary to abandon the original idea of creating a social and cultural center. Ulkin did not compromise and did not make changes, so the project was transferred to Mosproject-2, headed by architect Mikhail Posokhin, who brought in Zurab Tsereteli as a designer. The design project of the shopping center was one of the first large-scale works of the famous sculptor. The construction of the Okhotny Ryad shopping center began in 1993, and the main construction and installation works were completed in the summer of 1997, which allowed it to be opened by the 850th anniversary of Moscow. In 1997, the Okhotny Ryad shopping center became a laureate of the MIPIM AWARDS international competition.
