Sustainability in Every Sip: How Montes Wines is Transforming Winemaking

Montes Wines Regenerative Agriculture

For its innovating sustainable practices that improve vineyard management, ensuring high-quality wine production while fostering ecological regeneration, Montes Wines has been named a winner of the International Sustainability Awards. The Chilean winery is leading the way in sustainable viticulture, proving that exceptional winemaking and environmental responsibility can thrive together.

Founded in 1987, Montes Wines has long been recognized for pushing the boundaries of quality and innovation in Chilean winemaking. In 2020, the company took a bold step toward a greener future with the launch of its Regenerative Impact: Growing with Purpose initiative. Focused on restoring soil health, capturing carbon and improving water efficiency, the project is setting new benchmarks for sustainability in the wine industry.

“Montes Wines has demonstrated an extraordinary ability to integrate environmental stewardship with winemaking excellence,” said Alexander Chetchikov, President of the World Luxury Chamber of Commerce. “Their regenerative agriculture practices serve as a model for the industry, showing how sustainability can be both impactful and scalable.”

Traditional agricultural methods have contributed to soil degradation, biodiversity loss, and increased carbon emissions. In contrast, regenerative agriculture works to heal the land while cultivating it. Montes Wines has fully embraced this approach, implementing techniques that enhance soil structure, improve water retention, and increase the nutrient cycle—all while reducing environmental impact. These methods not only support the environment but also benefit local communities by improving yields and reducing production costs for farmers.

The winery’s commitment to regenerative agriculture has led to measurable results. Over the past four years, it has sequestered 19,000 tons of CO2 in its soil—helping to combat climate change through carbon capture. Additionally, water consumption per hectare has been reduced by 10%, a crucial achievement in an industry that relies heavily on irrigation. By increasing organic matter in the soil by 0.4% annually, Montes Wines is enhancing the land’s natural ability to absorb and store carbon, making a lasting impact on both the environment and the wine industry.

Beyond its vineyards, Montes Wines is actively shaping the future of sustainable winemaking. The winery is collaborating with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) on a project titled “Scaling Regenerative Practices for the Restoration and Improvement of Soils and Biodiversity in Chile’s Agricultural Sector.” This initiative aims to extend sustainable farming techniques beyond the wine industry, fostering greater environmental awareness across the region.

Additionally, Montes Wines is participating in a water footprint measurement project alongside 25 other wineries in the Colchagua Valley. By sharing data and refining water management strategies, the company is contributing to a collective effort to improve resource efficiency in Chilean viticulture. Under the Science Based Targets initiative, Montes Wines has also pledged to reduce its Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 46% by 2030, reinforcing its leadership in climate-conscious winemaking.

Recognition from the International Sustainability Awards underscores the winery’s role as a sustainability leader. Its commitment to regenerative agriculture, carbon reduction, and water conservation is shaping the industry’s future, proving that environmental responsibility and premium winemaking can go hand in hand.
