Verdelago Resort in Portugal has been recognized by International Sustainability Awards in 2026 for responsible hospitality through biodiversity conservation, renewable energy integration, sustainable water management, and community engagement. The recognition reflects an approach that incorporates environmental and social considerations into the resort’s development and daily operations.
Verdelago Resort follows a Sustainability Management Plan covering areas including energy and water efficiency, waste management, biodiversity, and local sourcing. Its technical infrastructure includes a Centralized Technical Management System for monitoring and controlling HVAC and electrical systems, heat pumps, and an on-site solar power plant. Surplus solar energy is supplied at lower rates to an energy community established in partnership with the Municipality of Castro Marim.
Biodiversity protection is another central element of the resort’s environmental strategy. Measures include elevated certified-wood walkways that help protect vegetation, dune barriers, native and low-water-use landscaping, insect hotels, bird boxes, and monitoring of Mediterranean Temporary Ponds. Verdelago also works with environmental organizations and specialists on wildlife conservation and environmental awareness initiatives.
Water management remains particularly important in southern Portugal. The resort uses weather data to adjust irrigation and is developing a desalination plant intended to supply water for swimming pools and landscape irrigation, reducing demand on the intermunicipal network.
“This recognition reflects the direction we have established for Verdelago Resort – one where hospitality, responsible resource management, biodiversity conservation, and engagement with the local community are considered together as part of our long-term development,” said Paulo Fernando Fortunato Monteiro, Development General Manager.
