Alexander Chechikov: Mr. Wahjono, congratulations on Pullman Lombok Merujani Mandalika Beach Resort’s recent recognition at the International Sustainability Awards 2025. To begin, how would you define the resort’s unique identity, and how does it contribute to Mandalika’s growing reputation as a premier luxury destination?
Budi Wahjono: Our identity blends modern elegance with local culture. We’re proud to offer a luxury experience that’s rooted in Lombok’s heritage and natural beauty. we are a bridge between culture, community, and conscious travel. This makes us a standout in Mandalika and helps position the area as a rising premium destination.
AC: How does Pullman Lombok integrate local culture and heritage into its design and service to create a genuinely immersive experience for international guests?
BW: Through design, storytelling, and service. Our resort reflects Sasak architecture and traditions. Guests are welcomed with local touches — from culinary experiences to cultural workshops — to make their stay truly immersive.
AC: Sustainability has become a defining theme in today’s luxury hospitality. How has Pullman Lombok embraced this shift, particularly through its award- winning garden-to-table practices and waste reduction strategies?
BW: Sustainability isn’t a feature for us — it’s a framework. Our garden-to-table initiative uses organic ingredients grown in our on-site farm, reducing carbon footprint and ensuring the freshest produce. We’ve also implemented food waste tracking systems, composting programs, and eliminated single-use plastics across the resort.
AC: How does Pullman Lombok approach training and development to ensure staff are aligned with the brand’s commitment to luxury and sustainability?
BW: We invest heavily in immersive training that blends luxury service fundamentals with our sustainability ethos. From onboarding to continuous learning, our team is trained not only to deliver personalized experiences but also to become ambassadors of conscious hospitality. This includes environmental workshops, cultural sensitivity programs, and leadership development to ensure our values are embedded at every level of service.

AC: What are some of the challenges you’ve faced in establishing a luxury resort in an emerging destination, and how have you overcome them?
BW: Infrastructure and perception are two primary challenges. In the early days, limited access and brand awareness posed real hurdles. But we turned this into an opportunity — by partnering with the local government, supporting the Mandalika development, and elevating Lombok as a luxury alternative to more saturated destinations. Our approach has always been long-term: build trust, build quality, and build connections with the local ecosystem.
AC: How does the resort customize its services to cater to the diverse needs of your guests, from wellness seekers to adventure travelers?
BW: We offer multiple lifestyle pathways under one roof. For wellness seekers, we’ve curated personalized yoga sessions, spa rituals using local herbs, and nutritious dining options. For adventure travelers, the proximity to the Mandalika Circuit, waterfalls, and surf spots allows us to craft bold itineraries
AC: In a competitive luxury market, which upcoming innovations or initiatives at Pullman Lombok are you most enthusiastic about that will distinguish the resort from others?
BW: At Pullman Lombok Merujani Mandalika Beach Resort, we’re excited about several upcoming initiatives that will help set us apart in the luxury market.
One of them is the creation of our own Frangipani oil, made from flowers around the resort. It will be used in spa treatments and offered as a special souvenir, giving guests a unique and memorable connection to Lombok.
We’re also partnering with a third-party recycling company to turn plastic waste from the resort into useful products. This supports our sustainability goals and helps reduce our environmental impact.
Another local product we’re proud to introduce is homemade coconut oil, made using traditional methods. It will be used in both spa and culinary experiences, adding a natural and local touch for our guests.
Lastly, we’re developing a Farm-to-Table program, where we source fresh ingredients directly from local farmers. This not only ensures high quality and freshness but also supports the local community.
These simple but meaningful innovations reflect our commitment to sustainability, local culture, and memorable guest experiences.

AC: Leading a luxury brand requires unique leadership qualities. What personal values and leadership philosophies do you bring to managing Pullman Lombok, and how do you inspire your team to maintain excellence?
BW: I believe in cultivating a culture where every team member feels seen, heard, and motivated to contribute meaningfully. I encourage initiative and celebrate progress — not perfection. When your people feel proud of their work and aligned with the brand’s purpose, excellence becomes a natural result.
AC: In what ways does the resort’s organizational philosophy shape its approach to innovation and continuous improvement in service delivery?
BW: Our philosophy is simple: progress together, anytime, everywhere. We believe that innovation isn’t just about big changes — it’s about daily improvements, open communication, and growing as one team. Everyone is encouraged to share ideas, take initiative, and keep learning, no matter their role.
AC: The luxury hospitality industry is evolving rapidly. In your view, how is the definition of luxury shifting over the next forthcoming years, particularly in the context of resorts located in emerging destinations like Lombok?
BW: Luxury is no longer defined by excess — it’s defined by intention. Travelers are seeking connection, meaning, and authenticity. In emerging destinations like Lombok, this shift is even more potent. Guests want to feel they are discovering something raw yet refined, untouched yet thoughtfully curated. At Pullman Lombok, we embrace this evolution by creating spaces and stories that speak to the soul, not just the senses.

By embracing innovative sustainability initiatives and a deep connection to local culture, Pullman Lombok Merujani Mandalika Beach Resort continues to evolve in harmony with the expectations of today’s luxury travelers. Through ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility, personalized guest experiences, and community engagement, the resort is well-positioned to set new standards in luxury hospitality within emerging destinations like Lombok.
Thank you very much for your time, Mr. Wahjono, and congratulations once again on your remarkable achievement!
