The Art of Nightlife: Benwu Studio’s Award-Winning Design for Basement Never Sleeps Nightclub & Gallery

Benwu Studio

Found at No. 8 Hengshan Road in Shanghai, the Basement Never Sleeps (BNS) nightclub and gallery is a transformative space that embodies the essence of modern nightlife. Spanning approximately 1,300 square meters, this venue combines the allure of a high-energy nightclub with the sophistication of a contemporary art gallery. Designed by the acclaimed Benwu Studio, BNS is a cultural incubator where art and social interaction collide, creating an unforgettable experience for patrons.

Ambitious Concept

BNS was conceived as a response to the evolving needs of nightlife enthusiasts, particularly in the wake of the pandemic. Benwu Studio’s founders, Hongchao Wang, and Peng You, envisioned a venue that would allow guests to engage with art while enjoying vibrant social interactions. “Our goal was to create a space that excites the senses and fosters community,” they shared. This innovative approach draws on the rich heritage of nightclubs worldwide, which have always been epicenters of radical change, bold experimentation, and the celebration of life.

Fusion of Art and Nightlife

At the heart of BNS lies the unique integration of art and nightlife. This dynamic venue attracts a young, culturally engaged audience eager to explore new trends. Each corner of BNS has been precision-crafted to inspire creativity and social connection. The layout includes an expansive underground entertainment space, divided into a dance floor, bar, VIP rooms, and private lounges, each designed to evoke a sense of curiosity and exploration.

Inspiration for the design came from a thorough examination of the historical evolution of nightclubs, including renowned spaces like Moddox in Milan and Studio 54 in New York. These iconic venues helped shape the vision for BNS, leading to a space that is as much about culture as it is about nightlife. The nightclub serves as a canvas for artistic expression, inviting guests to engage with both the visual and auditory delights that unfold around them.

Sensory Experience

Upon entering BNS, guests are greeted by an inviting atmosphere created through warm lighting and textured aluminum panels. This contrast sets the stage for what awaits inside – a world where art and nightlife coexist. Each private room within the club tells its own story, drawing inspiration from iconic films and cultural moments. For instance, Private Room 1 pays homage to Scarface, featuring retro gangster elements, while Private Room 2 captures the essence of 1980s New York through a luxurious, dark aesthetic reminiscent of Halston’s glamorous nights.

The lighting design, heavily influenced by contemporary artists like James Turrell, adds a layer of magic to the environment. With adjustable brightness that can shift the mood of the space, BNS ensures that every moment feels unique and immersive. The attention to detail extends to the restroom area, adorned with graffiti and art installations that turn what is often a mundane experience into a memorable one.

Connecting Through Culture

BNS serves as a cultural hub where the boundaries of art and nightlife blur. The gallery space above the nightclub, accessible via a stunning installation by artist Xu Zhen, transforms the venue into a lively arts center by day and a bustling nightclub by night. This duality enhances the experience, allowing guests to transition seamlessly between appreciating art and enjoying nightlife.

Moreover, the design incorporates movable walls and double-sided screens, offering flexibility for various events, from art exhibitions to live performances. This adaptability is essential for a generation that craves variety and novelty in their social experiences.

Celebration of Modern Luxury

As the recipient of the Luxury Lifestyle Awards for Best Luxury Commercial Interior Design, Shanghai, China, BNS exemplifies the pinnacle of modern nightlife. The studio’s commitment to innovative design not only elevates the clubbing experience but also enriches Shanghai’s cultural landscape. For high-end travelers seeking unique experiences, BNS stands as a must-visit destination an artistic playground where connections are made, and memories are created.

With its thoughtful integration of art and nightlife, Basement Never Sleeps is not just a venue; it’s a celebration of life, culture, and the joy of living in the moment. Whether you’re an art aficionado or a nightlife enthusiast, BNS invites you to explore its vibrant spaces and become part of a larger narrative that defines contemporary urban experiences.

As the sun sets over Shanghai, the doors of BNS open to a world of possibilities where every night is an invitation to dance, connect, and create. For those ready to dive into an extraordinary nightlife experience, the Basement Never Sleeps awaits.
