TOP 100 Sustainable Hotels & Resorts
Situated in the heart of Hong Kong’s last traditional fishing village, the Tai O Heritage Hotel stands as a testament to heritage conservation, sustainability, and community integration. As the first and only UNESCO-awarded hotel project in Hong Kong and Mainland China, it serves as a unique bridge between the past and the future.
Housed in the revitalized Old Tai O Police Station—a Grade II historic building dating back to 1902—the hotel seamlessly blends colonial architectural charm with modern eco-tourism principles. Operated as a not-for-profit social enterprise since its opening in 2012, the hotel reinvests its surplus into the preservation of Tai O’s cultural and environmental heritage. By following international conservation guidelines such as The Burra Charter, it meticulously restores historical features, preserves oral histories, and rejuvenates the collective memories of the fishing village community.
Tai O Heritage Hotel is deeply rooted in its local surroundings. Over half of its staff are Tai O villagers, and its culinary offerings highlight local ingredients such as salted fish and shrimp paste sourced from village suppliers. Beyond hospitality, the hotel actively promotes climate resilience through initiatives like typhoon relief services and the Tai O Stilt Houses Rehabilitation Programme, safeguarding the village from environmental challenges.
Since its inception, the hotel has welcomed over 2 million visitors and contributed to more than 100 community service projects. Through its efforts, Tai O Heritage Hotel continues to preserve the area’s unique customs, celebrate its storied past, and inspire a sustainable future for generations to come.
