https://shumiwinery.com/en/homeIn Georgia’s storied Kakheti region, centuries of viticultural tradition meet contemporary mastery at SHUMI Winery & Estate, a family-founded winery that has played a defining role in shaping modern Georgian winemaking while honoring its ancient roots. Established in 1997, SHUMI has earned international recognition for setting benchmarks in quality, authenticity, and innovation, grounded in Georgia’s 8,000-year-old wine heritage.
The estate’s vineyards are located within one of the country’s most historically significant landscapes, bordering the National Park and Museum of Prince Alexander Chavchavadze. Once shared by Georgian kings, poets, and imperial figures, these lands imbue SHUMI with a rich cultural legacy that continues to inform its philosophy and identity.
SHUMI is widely regarded as a pioneer of scientific and sustainable viticulture in Georgia. It was the first winery in the country to implement green harvesting, organic and biodynamic cultivation, and advanced bio methods in vineyard management. In collaboration with the Free University of Brussels, SHUMI also introduced the cultivation of indigenous yeast sourced directly from its vineyards, preserving the microzone character of each wine.
A cornerstone of the estate’s work is the revival of rare Georgian grape varieties once nearing extinction. Through extensive research and propagation, SHUMI has reintroduced varieties such as Ubakluri, Simonaseuli, and Shavi Rkatsiteli. This commitment is supported by the Comprehensive Varietal Collection Vineyard, the world’s largest private vine collection, featuring over 2,000 varieties from 47 countries.
Innovation at SHUMI extends to patented wines with no global counterparts, including SHOBILI, a sparkling Qvevri wine, ZIGU, an aromatic fortified wine crafted from hundreds of rare grapes, and BARBALE, the world’s only ice wine produced in Qvevri.
Beyond winemaking, SHUMI is a pioneer of Georgian enotourism. Its twelve-hectare estate integrates the country’s first wine museum, cultural pavilions, art installations, and immersive experiences that unite wine, history, and tradition.
Rooted in heritage yet forward-looking, SHUMI Winery & Estate continues to shape how Georgian wine is understood, experienced, and celebrated on the global stage.
