Founded in 2010, Márcio Lopes Winemaker stands as one of Portugal’s most distinctive boutique wine projects, celebrated for its authenticity, craftsmanship, and deep respect for terroir. Working primarily in the Vinho Verde and Douro regions, Márcio Lopes has built a body of work that bridges tradition and innovation — a vision internationally recognized with inclusion in the Luxury Lifestyle Awards’ TOP 100 Premium Wine & Spirits Brands for 2025.
At the heart of the project lies a clear philosophy: to recover what time has nearly erased and allow it to speak again through wine. From the outset, Lopes focused on old, often abandoned vineyards, farming them with organic but non-certified practices, minimal intervention, and deep respect for biodiversity. Guided by his motto, “To experiment. To do. Concrete,” he produces wines of purity and identity — fermented with native yeasts, often with extended skin contact, low or no sulfur, and, in some cases, crafted in amphora or as ancestral-method sparkling wines.
The brands Pequenos Rebentos and Proibido quickly became references for authenticity in Portuguese wine. Critics have taken note: Wine Advocate’s Mark Squires called one release “the best wine I have ever seen from this increasingly fine producer,” while many publications cite Lopes as one of Portugal’s most exciting winemakers. With multiple accolades, including the Best Upcoming Winemaker Award, Young Winemaker Award, and a place among Robert Parker’s Top 100 World Wine Discoveries, Márcio Lopes Winemaker continues to champion merit, authenticity, and the profound beauty of Portuguese wine craftsmanship.
Beyond awards, the project is rooted in responsibility and continuity. From the recovery of historic vineyards to the development of Quinta do Pombal and Quinta do Malhô, growth has been steady and intentional. Sustainability, fair partnerships with growers, and low-impact viticulture remain central to every decision.
More than a winery, Márcio Lopes Winemaker is a living expression of vision and perseverance — proof that great wine is born where patience, integrity, and imagination meet the land.
