Verdelago Resort is a contemporary hospitality destination in Portugal where responsible tourism, environmental stewardship, and a strong connection to the Algarve landscape influence every aspect of the guest experience. Open since July 2023, the resort has developed an operational model that considers the natural environment alongside comfort, design, and long-term regional value.

In 2026, Verdelago Resort was recognized by the International Sustainability Awards for its approach to responsible hospitality, encompassing biodiversity conservation, renewable energy, sustainable water management, and community engagement.

Environmental considerations have been embedded into the property from its development onward. Elevated certified-wood walkways help protect sensitive vegetation and dune habitats, while native and low-water-use landscaping and carefully directed outdoor lighting reduce environmental disturbance. The resort’s Sustainability Management Plan provides a framework for continued progress across energy, water, waste, biodiversity, and sourcing.

Energy efficiency is supported by a Centralized Technical Management System, heat pumps, and an on-site solar power plant that generates surplus electricity. Excess solar energy is supplied at reduced rates to a local energy community created with the Municipality of Castro Marim.

Water conservation is equally important in the drought-prone Algarve. Verdelago uses weather-informed irrigation, drip systems, and monitoring technology, while a planned desalination facility will provide water for swimming pools and landscape irrigation.

The resort also actively supports local biodiversity. Its initiatives include dune protection, bird boxes, insect hotels, wildlife monitoring, conservation of Mediterranean Temporary Ponds, and collaborations with organizations such as Vita Nativa, RIAS, and the University of Algarve. Educational activities have already engaged more than 300 local students in environmental projects.

Verdelago’s regional contribution extends to employment and procurement, with approximately 95% of permanent employees living within 50 kilometers of the resort and 62% of food and beverage suppliers based in the Faro district as of December 2025.

Through thoughtful resource management, conservation, education, and local collaboration, Verdelago Resort presents a hospitality model closely connected to the environmental and social future of the Algarve.
