Stepping into Zhiwaling Heritage Hotel is like entering a living story of Bhutan; one told through centuries-old timber, hand-carved murals, and the warmth of local hospitality. This distinctive property has been named Best Luxury Heritage Hotel in Bhutan at the Luxury Lifestyle Awards 2025, a recognition of its cultural authenticity and thoughtful approach to modern comfort.
Built entirely by Bhutanese artisans over five years, Zhiwaling Heritage is the kingdom’s first luxury hotel to be fully owned, designed, and staffed by its people. The architecture draws inspiration from fortress-like dzongs, with traditional stonework and intricate wood carvings throughout. On its grounds stands a 450-year-old timber temple, relocated from the historic Gangtey Monastery, anchoring the property in spiritual heritage.
Beyond architecture, the hotel offers immersive experiences that allow guests to engage deeply with Bhutanese life. Soe-Thab and Gallery House invite guests to experience Bhutanese traditions firsthand. At the Soe-Thab, an open-air mud stove, guests take part in interactive cooking that revives age-old culinary practices. In the Gallery House, Deki, Zhiwaling’s in-house artisan, guides guests in ceramic painting, creating keepsakes inspired by Bhutanese art and culture. Menlha Spa draws on Bhutan’s healing heritage with hot stone baths and holistic treatments, while dedicated meditation and yoga spaces overlook the sacred Himalayan landscapes. Cultural activities such as butter lamp offerings and archery further immerse visitors in the spiritual and cultural essence of Bhutan.
Sustainability is very important to Zhiwaling’s philosophy, with eco-conscious practices including zero-waste operations, electric buggies, and carbon-management initiatives.
Alexander Chetchikov, CEO of Luxury Lifestyle Awards and President of the World Luxury Chamber of Commerce, remarked: “Zhiwaling Heritage represents a living expression of Bhutan’s heritage. Every detail speaks of authenticity, offering guests both cultural depth and modern comfort. This recognition celebrates their role in preserving tradition while setting new benchmarks for sustainable luxury hospitality.”
