The Westin Bayshore, Vancouver has been recognized as a 2026 winner of the International Sustainability Awards in the Sustainable Initiative and Sustainable Services categories, reflecting its responsible hospitality approach through data-driven environmental management, circular resource practices, and biodiversity conservation.
Located on Vancouver’s waterfront, The Westin Bayshore, Vancouver integrates environmental considerations across food and beverage, guest rooms, meetings and events, and hotel operations. Its approach focuses on reducing waste, improving resource efficiency, supporting responsible sourcing, and creating practical ways for guests and associates to participate in more sustainable practices.
Measurement and property-level action play a central role in this work. The hotel uses the Marriott Environmental Sustainability Hub to track carbon emissions, energy and water consumption, waste generation, and related costs. Through Marriott’s Sustainable Practices and Resilient Operations Update Tracker (SPROUT), the hotel also identifies and implements additional sustainability actions and operational practices that support Marriott’s broader carbon-reduction goals. Food-waste technology provides the culinary team with data to identify waste patterns and refine forecasting and preparation. An on-site Urban Cultivator supplies fresh microgreens and herbs for restaurant and banquet menus, while surplus edible food is redirected through Vancouver Food Runners.
The property has adopted a tap-first approach supported by refill stations across public areas, meeting spaces, amenity areas, and guestroom floors. Through Fill it Forward, reusable bottles and QR-enabled refill tracking encourage participation in reducing single-use plastics. Circular resource practices extend to organics composting, reusable and refillable housekeeping products, recycling, and the donation or repurposing of serviceable hotel items. The Marine Garden apiary, developed with Honeybee Centre, adds a biodiversity dimension by supporting local pollinators and guest education.
“Responsible hospitality is not defined by one initiative, but by the choices we make every day across our entire operation,” said Tanya Matthews, General Manager, The Westin Bayshore, Vancouver. “This recognition reflects the commitment of our associates to continually look for more thoughtful ways to reduce our environmental impact, use resources responsibly, and create meaningful opportunities for our guests to participate alongside us.”
Honoring the win, Alexander Chetchikov, President of the World Luxury Chamber of Commerce, said, “The Westin Bayshore, Vancouver demonstrates how responsible hospitality can be strengthened through measurable environmental management, resource efficiency, and thoughtful engagement. Its approach reflects practical leadership in addressing environmental priorities while integrating sustainability into the broader hospitality experience.”
