For decades, the mainstream cosmetic industry has operated on a highly profitable, deeply predatory business model: play on womens deepest insecurities, sell them a glossy, youth-obsessed perfection, and pocket the cash. From billboard ads of poreless, twenty-somethings to high-pressure sales tactics, the branding of medical aesthetics has historically suggested that a womans worth is tied exclusively to her youth and sexual availability.

As a feminist, a Doctoral Scholar of female agency, and the co-director of Sonata Aesthetics in Broomfield, Colorado, I used to be terrified of the term “feminist” in my professional life. I worried it was too political, too edgy, or too impolite for the hospitality-driven service industry. But as societal conversations shifted around me, I realized that standing silently in the background of our multi-million dollar medical spa was its own form of compliance.

Today, as Sonata celebrates its 22nd anniversary, I am proud to ask the question out loud: Can a feminist run a medical spa?

Our relationship with our appearance is deeply reflexive: what we see in the mirror instantly influences our interior life, and our interior life cues what we see when we look in the glass.

While it is a beautiful spiritual ideal to be so full of inner peace that your outer form is of no concern, the reality of being human in a visual culture is that we experience the world through our bodies and our faces. When a person is chronically preoccupied, anxious, or held back by a specific physical feature they dislike, that worry acts as a constant, draining distraction. It leaks away their energy, preventing them from being fully present with their families, their careers, and their creative callings.
