The hotel was selected for its practical, data-driven approach to waste reduction, in-room circular systems, and supply chain reform.

A standout initiative is the Circular Water Bottling Program, a system that replaces single-use bottles with reusable 750ml glass bottles, filtered through MODA technology and sanitised on-site. This change alone eliminates 39,068 single-use bottles annually from ever entering the guest rooms. The hotel also partners with suppliers to replace disposable packaging, introducing reusable milk kegs and produce containers. Sofitel Melbourne On Collins applies these changes to eliminate waste at the source, rather than manage it at the end of the cycle.

Certified by Green Globe in 2023, the hotel also holds Sustainable Tourism and EcoStar recognitions from the Australian Tourism Industry Council. Environmental performance is monitored through guest survey feedback, waste weight reduction, and cost comparison analysis. A second Winnow system was added in 2025 to improve food waste monitoring in high-volume kitchens.

In addition to internal improvements, the hotel fosters industry knowledge by sharing case studies with other properties, local governments, and Accor’s national and global procurement and sustainability teams.
