The Emilian Apennines are a welcoming and generous land, best explored slowly, consciously, and sustainably. This is a place that offers itineraries off the beaten tourist paths, allowing visitors to reconnect with nature while indulging in the beauty, history, art, culture, and exceptional food and wine traditions of the region.
From Modena to Parma, we take you on a slow journey through the gentle Emilian mountains, unveiling hidden corners where you can immerse yourself in nature and savour authentic local flavours.
From the foothills of the Modenese Apennines to Monte Cimone, the picturesque Frignano Park stretches across a breath-taking landscape. This is a must-visit destination for nature lovers seeking an excursion among lush forests, enchanting lakes, and unspoiled scenery.
A special mention goes to Lago Santo, the park’s largest lake at an altitude of 1,501 meters. Easily accessible by car with a convenient parking area, this lake offers stunning panoramic views and serves as a starting point for trekking trails leading to Monte Giovo, whose reflection shimmers on its waters.
Descending in altitude, the Sassi di Roccamalatina are another exclusive and fascinating stop in the Modenese Apennines. These striking rock formations are at the heart of a park featuring 100 kilometres of trails, accessible on foot, horseback, or by bike.
Before heading to Maranello for the final stop of your journey at the Ferrari Museum, we recommend a visit to the Bucaneve Waterfalls, hidden among the wooded slopes of Serramazzoni. These falls are even more enchanting due to the ancient legend of the impossible love between the shepherd Titiro and the noble lady Odina.
To end your day in the Modenese Apennines on a high note—where every corner holds a curious story, a breath-taking view, and a local delicacy—you should consider dining at Agriturismo e Ristorante Villa di Là. If you plan to continue your journey towards Parma, this charming agriturismo also offers cozy rooms with all modern comforts.
The menu highlights traditional dishes made with zero-kilometre farm products. House specialties include tortellini in broth, fresh pasta, and tigelle, best enjoyed with local cured meats and cheeses.
Contrary to what one might think, Parma is not just its historic centre—rich in contrasts, history, and traditions—but also everything that surrounds it, enriching its essence. In particular, its Apennine region is filled with wonders waiting to be discovered.
So, after exploring the gentle Modenese mountains, your short break can continue in the surroundings of the Ducal City.
An ideal starting point for immersing yourself in the lush nature of the Parmesan Apennines and fully experiencing its rhythm and flavours is the Albergo Diffuso Segarati Relax in Bardi di Parma. This charming rural village, surrounded by greenery, features winding alleys and traditional stone houses where you can stay.
Here, cows are raised to produce the Parmigiano Reggiano DOP Segarati Origin, which can be purchased alongside other farm products and Food Valley specialties at the village shop.
From here, your journey’s first stop is Bardi Castle, a stunning example of military architecture that majestically rises on a spur of red jasper. Inside, you’ll find the Museum of Valley Civilization and the Museum of Poaching and Traps.
Not far away, about 25 km from Bardi, you can also visit the Compiano Castle and the charming village of Borgo Val di Taro.
For nature lovers, the Ghirardi Nature Reserve is a surprising destination, especially if you enjoy trekking. This WWF Wildlife Oasis covers about 600 hectares of meadows, forests, and streams, providing a haven for countless species of animals, plants, and fungi. You can explore more than 15 km of hiking trails, immersing yourself in an ancient landscape where colours, scents, and atmospheres remain as authentic as ever.
Heading down toward Varano de’ Melegari, food enthusiasts can enjoy a visit to Caseificio Il Battistero, where Parmigiano Reggiano DOP has been produced since 1939 using milk exclusively from Val Ceno and Val Pessola. Here, you can experience cheese tastings along with other exceptional specialties from this outstanding farm.
And what better way to end a slow-travel journey than with a touch of wellness and relaxation?
From Salsomaggiore to Tabiano to Monticelli, an ideal route awaits spa lovers. That’s why we recommend not leaving the Parmesan Apennines without spending at least two days in Salsomaggiore. To fully embrace the timeless beauty of this renowned spa town while indulging in a pure moment of relaxation, book a stay at Hotel Kursaal, perfectly located near the town’s main attractions.
This charming retreat will captivate you with its elegant and refined atmosphere, complemented by an authentic and high-quality culinary experience.
The Emilian Apennines hold a special place in the hearts of those who live there—and in the hearts of those who visit, even if only for a few days. Don’t miss the chance to discover them!
