Embracing Tradition and Innovation: The Marriott Jabal Omar’s Journey in Luxury Hospitality

Few places in the world demand the same level of care, respect, and merit as Mecca, and the Marriott Hotel Jabal Omar has risen to that calling with distinction. Recently crowned Best Luxury Hotel in Mecca, the property is reconceiving what it means to merge world-class hospitality with the cultural and spiritual essence of Saudi Arabia. The award highlights Marriott’s global vision of elevating guest experiences while honoring the traditions and sacred character of the Holy City.

Guiding this success is Waleed Silan, whose career journey reflects both resilience and innovation. From his early roles at Sheraton and Dur Hospitality to leadership positions at Elaf Group and now Marriott, Waleed has consistently sought to balance international standards with the nuances of Saudi culture.

In this interview, he opens up about his professional milestones, the philosophy behind Marriott Jabal Omar’s celebrated guest experience, and how the hotel is contributing to the Kingdom’s Vision 2030 through empowerment, authenticity, and excellence. Alexander Chetchikov, President of the World Luxury Chamber of Commerce, leads our exclusive interview. Drawing on more than 17 years of experience recognizing the globe’s most distinguished luxury brands through the Luxury Lifestyle Awards, he offers rich expertise and discerning insight into the dynamic landscape of luxury.

Questions:

Alexander Chetchikov: Congratulations, Waleed, on the Marriott Hotel Jabal Omar winning the award for Best Luxury Hotel in Mecca! How does this award reflect Marriott’s global objectives and the culture of Saudi Arabia?

Waleed Silan: Thank you very much! This achievement embodies our vision of blending the global hospitality standards that Marriott is known for with the rich culture and unique spirituality of Mecca. We strive to provide an exceptional experience for pilgrims and visitors, focusing on meeting their specific needs.

AC: Can you share your personal journey in the hospitality industry, highlighting key milestones, challenges, and successes?

WS: My journey began at the Sheraton Hotel from 1996 to 1999, where I gained invaluable experience. After that, I joined Dur Hospitality from 1999 to 2015 as the Sales and Marketing Manager. Following my time at Dur, I moved to the Elaf Group, where I served in various roles until 2020. These experiences helped me build a solid foundation in hotel management. One of the challenges I faced was integrating global standards with local traditions, but I consider my success in achieving a balance between these two aspects one of my key accomplishments. Eventually, I joined Marriott in my current role, where I continue to grow and contribute to the industry.

AC: How do you integrate the spirituality of Mecca and loyalty programs like “Marriott Bonvoy” into your services for guests of the Holy Mosque?

WS: We see ourselves as part of the pilgrimage experience, so we focus on providing services that allow our guests to feel spiritual comfort. From the design of the hotel and its ambiance to personalized services, we strive to offer a comprehensive experience that reflects the spiritual and cultural values of the city.

Additionally, the “Marriott Bonvoy” program allows us to deepen our relationship with our loyal guests. We appreciate their loyalty and work to provide exclusive benefits and personalized experiences tailored to their needs, enhancing their sense of belonging and making their visits more special.

AC: What steps are you taking to ensure a distinguished hospitality experience that reflects Saudi values?

WS: We focus on training our staff to be ambassadors of Saudi culture. By educating them on local traditions and the importance of hospitality, we ensure that every guest feels welcomed and respected. We consider each visit an opportunity to enhance the positive image of the country.

AC: How do your efforts align with the Ministry of Tourism’s objectives and Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 in empowering Saudis in the tourism sector?

WS: Our vision aligns with the Ministry of Tourism’s goals and Vision 2030, which aims to empower Saudis in this vital sector. We work to attract travelers to explore Saudi culture and enhance local experiences. By providing exceptional hospitality, we contribute to boosting tourism and developing local skills.

AC: How does your leadership reflect the brand values of Marriott, and what are your future aspirations?

WS: My leadership is grounded in values of excellence, authenticity, and innovation. My vision includes empowering young Saudis to deliver exceptional hospitality while maintaining the esteemed global reputation of the Marriott brand. We aspire for the Marriott Hotel Jabal Omar to be a symbol of excellence in hospitality, achieving a balance between world-class services and deep respect for local culture.
