Stefan Schmid on Luxury Hospitality in Dubai

Stefan Schmid, Complex General Manager of Al Jaddaf Rotana Suite Hotel, leads one of Dubai’s distinguished all-suite hospitality destinations, recognized by Luxury Lifestyle Awards as the Best Luxury All-Suite Hotel in Dubai, UAE in 2026. Located in the vibrant Al Jaddaf district, the property combines residential-style comfort with full-service hospitality, offering spacious accommodations, diverse dining experiences, and wellness-focused amenities tailored to both short and extended stays. In conversation with Alexander Chetchikov, President of World Luxury Chamber of Commerce, Stefan Schmid discusses the evolving expectations of modern luxury travelers, operational innovation, sustainability, and the role of personalized hospitality in shaping long-term guest relationships.

Alexander Chetchikov: Al Jaddaf Rotana Suite Hotel has been recognized as the Best Luxury All-Suite Hotel in Dubai, UAE. How do you define the role of all-suite hospitality in today’s luxury travel landscape?

Stefan Schmid: I think guests are travelling differently in our present time. Whether they are here for business or leisure, they are looking for somewhere they can truly settle in rather than just spend the night.

That is something we are fortunate to offer. Our rooms and suites are noticeably more spacious than what many travellers are used to, and for guests staying a little longer, that extra space really changes the experience. They can work comfortably, spend time with family or simply unwind without feeling confined to a hotel room.

For me, that is where luxury is heading. It is about comfort, ease, and having the freedom to enjoy your stay in a way that suits you.

AC: Your property accommodates both business and leisure travelers. How do you ensure that the guest experience remains relevant across such diverse audiences?

SS: It really starts with understanding why someone has chosen to stay with us.

A guest visiting Dubai for meetings wants something very different from a family on holiday, but they both want to feel welcomed and looked after. That is where our team makes the difference. We encourage them to listen, to ask questions and to pay attention to the little details because those are often the things guests remember.

I have always believed that good hospitality isn’t about treating every guest the same. It’s about recognising every guest as an individual, because that’s what creates genuine, memorable experiences.

AC: The hotel has implemented several sustainability initiatives with measurable outcomes. How do you view the relationship between sustainability and luxury hospitality today?

SS: I think our industry has reached a point where sustainability is simply part of running a good hotel.

Guests expect us to be responsible, and quite rightly so. At the same time, they shouldn’t have to compromise on comfort or service. The challenge is finding smarter ways of operating that reduce our impact, while maintaining the standards people associate with a five-star stay.

That is something we continue to work on because sustainability isn’t a project with a finish line. It is an ongoing commitment.

AC: Technology-driven service enhancements have become an important part of hospitality operations. How do digital tools support the guest experience at your hotel?

SS: Technology has an important role, but I never want it to replace genuine hospitality.

If it helps us make the arrival process smoother, respond more quickly or understand our guests better, then it is doing exactly what it should. What it should not do, is create distance between our team and our guests.

People don’t come to a hotel because they want more technology. They come because they want to be looked after. Technology simply helps us do that more efficiently.

AC: The property places strong emphasis on long-stay and residential-style hospitality. What operational considerations are essential in maintaining consistency for extended-stay guests?

SS: Long-stay guests probably know your hotel better than anyone.

After a few weeks, they notice if something changes, but they also appreciate when the team remembers their routine or asks how they are doing. That is where consistency becomes so important. It isn’t just about housekeeping or maintenance; it is about every department working together to make each day feel just as comfortable as the first.

We want guests staying with us for a month to feel just as cared for on day thirty as they did on day one.

AC: Dubai continues to evolve as a global luxury destination. In your view, what distinguishes the city’s hospitality sector internationally?

SS: I have been working in hospitality for many years now, and what continues to impress me about Dubai is its ambition. The city never stands still, and that pushes all of us in the industry to keep improving as well.

Guests arrive with very high expectations because Dubai has built that reputation over many years. That is something healthy. It encourages hotels to innovate, invest in their people and never become complacent.

I also think Dubai’s diversity is one of its biggest strengths. We welcome guests from every corner of the world, and that makes working in hospitality here incredibly rewarding.

AC: As a hospitality leader, what principles guide your management approach in maintaining service excellence across a large-scale operation?

SS: For me, everything starts with the team.

Hotels are built by people, not buildings. You can have beautiful rooms and excellent facilities, but it is the people who create memorable experiences. My role is to make sure the team feels supported, respected and confident in what they do because guests notice that immediately.

I also try to spend as much time as possible out in the hotel. I enjoy talking to guests, listening to feedback and checking in with colleagues because that is where you get the most honest picture of how the business is performing.

At the end of the day, our industry is built on relationships. If we have made someone feel genuinely welcome and they choose to come back, then we have done our job well.

Al Jaddaf Rotana Suite Hotel continues to strengthen its position within Dubai’s luxury hospitality landscape through a combination of residential-style comfort, operational innovation, and personalized guest engagement. Under Stefan Schmid’s leadership, the property reflects a broader shift within the industry toward flexible luxury experiences that balance service consistency with evolving traveler expectations. The conversation highlights the growing importance of sustainability, technology integration, and long-term guest relationships in contemporary hospitality.
