Congratulations on being named one of the TOP 100 Premium Wine & Spirits Brands of the World, 2023! Nelson, as the Rum Master of Diplomático Rum, can you share your personal journey and the path that led you to become an esteemed figure in the world of rum craftsmanship?

Nelson Hernandez: I studied Mechanical Engineering at the Polytechnic University of Barquisimeto, in Venezuela, and soon after I started working at one of the most important oil companies in the country at the time. However, a short time later I decided to change my professional path and moved to the spirits world thanks to a visit I made to the DUSA distillery. The high level and complexity of the rum production process were key to making me fall in love with this industry.  I’ve been involved in the production of Diplomático rum since its inception. Currently, I’m one of the lead spokespersons of the brand, focusing on educating internal and external teams about Diplomático thanks to more than 35 years of experience as a Rum Master.

LLA: Diplomático Rum is celebrated for its intricate flavors and unparalleled quality. Could you elaborate on the unique characteristics that define Diplomático and set it apart as a top-tier premium spirit?

NH:  Diplomático Rum is the result of a unique blend of passion and craftsmanship. Masterfully crafted by a team of expert blenders pulling from over 60 different blending components to create intense complexities in unique expressions that honor the brand’s rich heritage and rum-making tradition. The result is a delicious smooth-tasting rum that can be sipped or mixed in sophisticated cocktails.  

 LLA: The aging process is crucial in crafting exceptional rum. How do you approach selecting and aging the barrels to achieve the distinct flavor profiles that Diplomático is renowned for?

NH: The distillery carries out strict monitoring and control of the aging process that occurs in each of the barrels and the distillates within them. Annually, we conduct statistical control sampling to ensure that the maturation process is as we desire, allowing us to understand the maturation profile of each of our rums.

LLA: Diplomático Rum has garnered numerous accolades and awards under your guidance. What do you believe sets Diplomático apart and has contributed to its recognition as a TOP 100 Premium Wine and Spirits Brand of the World in 2023?

NH: Without a doubt, we are talking about a product of the highest quality, made with the utmost care, detail, and passion. We have been creating unique and special rums for a long time, focusing on the super-premium category, and for this reason, we are proud to be part of this prestigious award.

LLA: Innovation is key to staying ahead in the competitive spirits industry. How do you balance tradition with innovation to continuously push the boundaries and evolve Diplomático’s offerings?

NH: The Distillery that crafts Diplomático is distinctive and innovative in itself. It houses three different distillation processes that are combined to deliver unique rums and produce a wide range of distillates. First, the Barbet Column process is originally from France and it helps us create a light, sharp, and fruity profile. Second, the Batch Kettle is originally from Canada and is usually employed to produce whisky, but we use it to produce semi-complex rums with tropical and toasted caramel notes. Finally, the Copper Pot Still, originally used in Scotland to produce whisky, gives us very deep, rich, and heavy rums, perfect to be the core of all our rums. 

LLA: As Diplomático expands its global footprint, how do you ensure that the brand’s essence and authenticity are preserved while catering to diverse consumer preferences and market trends?

NH: Diplomático rum has been gaining popularity for several reasons. Firstly, there’s been a shift in consumer preferences towards higher quality and craft spirits across the board, including rum.  Diplomático has a signature smooth taste profile perfect for sipping and savoring and it’s proving that consumers are more interested in elevated tasting experiences, craftsmanship, and the stories behind the products they consume.  

LLA: Sustainability and ethical sourcing are increasingly important considerations in today’s spirits industry. How does Diplomático uphold these values in its production processes, and what initiatives are in place to minimize environmental impact?

NH: Diplomático has long been committed to sustainability. In fact, the distillery where it is produced was the first in Latin America, in 2009, to receive the ISO 14001 certification, an internationally recognized environmental management system that helps companies manage their environmental responsibilities. This commitment has been deeply engraved in the brand’s philosophy and values and has been the foundation of its sustainability program ‘Distilled Consciously’. 

LLA: Nelson, your expertise extends beyond the distillery as you often represent Diplomático at events and engage with enthusiasts worldwide. How do you approach educating and connecting with consumers to foster a deeper appreciation for Diplomático Rum?

NH: Our main challenge remains to provide more education and knowledge about premium-and-above rum segments, especially to consumers. While tastings are a crucial part of our activation strategy, we will also need to use more technological tools as well as audio-visual and digital content to give consumers a safe, easy, and exciting experience as they shop our products. Regarding bartenders, the Diplomático Artisans of Taste competition was launched last year all over the world and aims to task bartenders with using their mixology skills to prepare sustainability-focused Diplomático serves, while also reducing food. 

LLA: Lastly, Nelson, what message would you like to convey to Diplomático’s loyal patrons and enthusiasts as they continue to savor and celebrate the extraordinary journey of Diplomático Rum?
