S Design Farm – Curators of Carefully Designed Interiors and Exteriors

S Design Farm Co., with its representative Director and president, Shikauchi Takeshi, believes that the coexistence of “convenience” and “advantages that cannot be expressed in numbers” is important in the future of house building, and they design them every day.  The trend-setting company has become the deserved recipient of a Luxury Lifestyle Awards in 2022, for Best Luxury Villa Architecture for Waterfall Villa in Japan.

S Design Farm’s list of services includes:

  • Architecture/interior planning, design, and supervision
  • Furniture/product planning, design, and production
  • Share office planning, design, and operation

Designing a building can be difficult. Should convenience be prioritized? Of course, the more convenient the better. Shikauchi Takeshi believes that the coexistence of  “convenience” and “somewhat inconvenient but not quantifiable goodness” will be important in building houses in the future. He believes that a space like a blank space that is not overly intentional is very important – it’s not just a functional room where you can sleep, eat, and get dressed.

At S Design Farm, they focus on design considerations while calculating the performance of thermal environments. They present the elements that architects are good at, such as “goodness of land, light, wind”.

Waterfall Villa, located in Okinawa, Japan, was initiated on the 17th of November 2020, and completed on the 29th of October 2021, with the intention of serving as a ‘weekend home’. Contributing design and site supervision, Shikauchi Takeshi and Watanabe Hiroki of S Design Farm created this ‘new build’, a villa in Okinawa, and interior design services were provided by Watanabe Hiromi.  The structure is completed with reinforced concrete on the 1st floor above ground. The site area is 343.03 m2, with a total floor area of 59.07 ㎡.

The building is a construction in which a “sloping wall with flowing water” was devised in continuity with the terrace pool.  The structural design for this project was undertaken by TanakaTetsuya Architectural structural plan, and the interior design was the creative work of Watanabe Hiromi. The developer that they worked with on this project was CLAVI Design Produce: MAREAS Co., Ltd.

It is a unique premises with a gentle slope overlooking the sea and the sky surrounded by nature. The home was designed for you to enjoy the beautiful scenery and natural elements of Okinawa – including the light of the rising and setting sun, the wind blowing from the sea and the forest spreading behind.

There was a construction plan on the adjacent site – on the side with the ocean, so the team needed to consider a building that meets conflicting requests.  Therefore, they created an experience like water flowing from the sea by setting up a blindfolded wall diagonally, to hide the building that is built on the adjacent site and let water flow into the pool from the tip of the diagonal wall.

The sloping wall where the water flows helps to block the sight from the outside and provide the sea view from the inside. As the number of virtual experiences increases, the envelopment in nature gives us the opportunity to enrich our hearts and emotions that we cannot get in our daily lives. S Design Farm believes that the role of architecture created in a rich natural environment is to maximize the charm of the land and enhance the experience.
