Mezcales Casa Armando, a name synonymous with tradition, sustainability, and innovation, has claimed the Luxury Lifestyle Awards for Best Premium Mezcal Estate in Mexico 2024. This remarkable achievement is the culmination of five generations of dedication to the art of mezcal-making, rooted in the rich cultural heritage of Oaxaca. As a leading producer in the industry, Mezcales Casa Armando not only sets itself apart with its consistent quality but also by pioneering sustainable and socially responsible practices.
Founded in Oaxaca, the ancestral heartland of mezcal, Mezcales Casa Armando represents the fulfillment of a multi-generational dream. The company has evolved into the foremost leader in mezcal production in Mexico, establishing a strong presence not only in the domestic market but also in international territories like Central America, Europe, Australia, and Asia. Mezcales Casa Armando is more than just a distillery; it is a custodian of family values, a guardian of Oaxaca’s cultural legacy, and a celebration of the artisanal spirit that has shaped the region’s mezcal-making tradition.
At the core of Mezcales Casa Armando’s production lies a vast estate with 11 hectares of land, home to 14,500 Espadín agave plants. These plants are carefully cultivated, benefiting from the company’s use of first-generation agaves nurtured in its very own greenhouse. With certifications such as ISO 9001, HACCP, and Kosher, as well as recognition as a Clean Industry by the Secretariat of Environmental Protection of Mexico, the distillery prioritises quality and responsibility at every step of the process.
One of the defining aspects of Mezcales Casa Armando is its groundbreaking sustainability program, known as Método Verde. This comprehensive initiative ensures that the mezcal production process not only delivers premium quality but also protects the environment. From the very beginning, agave seeds are planted in greenhouses to guarantee the health and sustainability of the plants. In the production phase, traditional methods are honored, such as using certified wood for baking agave in stone ovens, but with a modern twist—no animals are harmed or used in the process, thanks to the company’s reliance on mechanical grinding machines.
In addition to these practices, Mezcales Casa Armando utilizes solar concentrators for energy, collects rainwater, and operates its own wastewater treatment plant. Furthermore, they go the extra mile by reusing agave waste, contributing to a zero-waste production cycle. This comprehensive environmental stewardship has earned the distillery widespread acclaim and recognition, setting a benchmark for sustainability within the mezcal industry.
At the heart of Mezcales Casa Armando’s portfolio are its four distinguished brands, each of which tells a unique story of heritage, craftsmanship, and flavor.
El Recuerdo Mezcal is a tribute to the tradition of mezcal-making in Oaxaca. Baked on river stones using certified wood, this mezcal is available with or without the iconic agave worm, offering a versatile drinking experience. It captures the essence of Mexican tradition, which is why it remains the top-selling mezcal in Duty-Free Mexico stores, a favorite among international tourists looking for an authentic Mexican gift.
Zignum, meaning “spearhead,” embodies innovation and sophistication in mezcal production. Known for its exceptionally smooth and refined taste, Zignum is aged in American white oak barrels, creating a depth and complexity that delights even the most discerning palates. Its Añejo, Reposado, and Cristalino varieties are widely celebrated, with Zignum earning the title of the most awarded mezcal in the world, making it a must-try for both connoisseurs and newcomers to the spirit.
Señorío Mezcal showcases the perfect harmony of two distillations, resulting in a beautifully balanced soft-smoked mezcal. The smoky notes are complemented by the authentic flavors of Espadín agave, creating a distinctive taste experience. Aged in American white oak barrels, Señorío Mezcal Reposado and Añejo bring forward more intense, complex notes, appealing to those who appreciate the nuanced flavors of a masterfully crafted mezcal.
Finally, Metchi, a smoky and spicy worm salt, complements the mezcal experience by enhancing the flavors of cocktails and dishes. Its earthy tones pay homage to Oaxaca’s culinary traditions, making it a unique and versatile addition to any mezcal ritual.
Mezcales Casa Armando’s dedication to Oaxaca extends beyond mezcal production. The company actively supports two local non-governmental organizations: Fundación Don Antonio Rivera Venegas and Fundación El Agave y Nosotros. Through these initiatives, the company gives back to the community that has played such an integral role in its success, reinforcing its position as a socially responsible business.
Mezcales Casa Armando is a symbol of quality, sustainability, and tradition. By embracing modern innovation while remaining true to its roots, the company has elevated the mezcal industry, both in Mexico and around the world.
