For founder and Chairman Idan Chiang, interior design begins with understanding human behavior. Her academic background in sociology informs an approach that considers every residence as an extension of its owner’s identity. Completed in April 2025, The Grand Inheritance transforms two separate high-rise apartments in Taipei City into a unified residence conceived as a home for multiple generations. Rather than emphasizing scale alone, the project explores how architecture can encourage continuity between family members while preserving privacy, individuality, and daily comfort.
The design introduces a dialogue between New Classical architectural language and restrained contemporary frameworks. A meditative central volume organizes the residence, separating public entertaining areas from private family quarters without relying on conventional partitions. A dedicated Buddhist room becomes both a spiritual centerpiece and a thoughtful spatial buffer, allowing different generations to coexist comfortably while maintaining distinct personal environments.
One of the defining characteristics of The Grand Inheritance is its deliberate approach to circulation. Private corridors measuring between two and 2.2 meters in width required the intentional reduction of usable floor area, yet this decision transforms movement throughout the residence into an architectural experience more commonly associated with luxury hospitality than private living. The generous passageways contribute visual depth while reinforcing a sense of calm progression from one space to another.
Equally considered is the relationship between the residence and its natural surroundings. A carefully positioned third corridor frames views toward Da’an Forest Park, allowing seasonal changes and natural light to become part of everyday life. Rather than functioning merely as outlooks, these framed perspectives become active participants in the home’s atmosphere.
Luxury within The Grand Inheritance is expressed through purposeful functionality. A professionally engineered wine cellar incorporates controlled temperature and humidity systems, oak shelving, anti-condensation detailing, and specialized transparent metal doors designed to reduce light exposure. Elsewhere, an industrial-grade stainless-steel kitchen equipped for demanding culinary use demonstrates how technical performance can coexist with refined residential aesthetics.
Throughout the residence, material selections reinforce the project’s broader narrative. Cypress wood, natural stone, metal finishes, and carefully selected antique elements contribute layers of texture that evoke permanence and family heritage rather than short-lived trends. Vintage Danish furniture, including notable collector pieces such as the Chieftain Chair and Tree Chair, introduces historical craftsmanship into a contemporary residential setting.
Perhaps the most distinctive planning decision is the allocation of the residence’s premier views and balcony access to the owner’s study rather than the primary bedroom. This departure from conventional luxury residential planning reflects an emphasis on intellectual life, reflection, and personal enrichment as central components of contemporary luxury living.
