Questions:

Alexander Chetchikov: Your sustainability model, “Xostenibilidad,” integrates People, Planet, and Prosperity. Can you share specific examples of how each pillar is reflected in the day-to-day operations of Hotel Xcaret Arte?

Iliana María Rodríguez Cavazos: At Hotel Xcaret Arte, the “People” pillar is about valuing our team and community. We ensure dignified work, fair wages, continuous training, and development opportunities for our staff while also being a platform that amplifies Mexican art by collaborating with local artisans to showcase their work in the hotel.  For “Planet,” we’ve implemented energy and water efficiency systems, along with advanced water treatment and reuse technologies, and embraced eco-integrative architecture that preserves local biodiversity. Finally, “Prosperity” focuses on creating shared prosperity through sustainable tourism, supporting local suppliers, and reinvesting in community initiatives. Every decision aligns with these pillars, ensuring balance and harmony.

AC: Eco-integrative architecture is one of the defining features of Hotel Xcaret Arte. What were the biggest challenges in designing and maintaining a hotel that morphs with its natural surroundings, while preserving 80% of relocated trees and plants?

IMRC: The biggest challenge was respecting the environment while creating a luxury experience. We worked closely with environmental experts to carefully plan construction, relocating, and replanting trees to maintain biodiversity. Maintaining this harmony requires constant monitoring and innovative maintenance techniques, like using natural pest control and selecting native plants that thrive with minimal water. It’s a delicate balance, but it’s at the core of who we are.

AC: The ALL-FUN INCLUSIVE® concept incorporates environmental education programs for guests. How do these initiatives, like the Educate to Conserve program, impact both guest experience and environmental awareness?

IMRC: The ALL-FUN INCLUSIVE® concept integrates sustainability into every aspect of the guest experience. While environmental programs like Educate to Conserve are carried out by specialized teams behind the scenes, their impact is reflected in the immersive connection guests feel with nature during their stay. From experiencing preserved ecosystems within our parks to learning about conservation efforts woven into our storytelling, guests leave with a deeper appreciation for the environment and an understanding of Grupo Xcaret’s commitment to protecting it. These efforts enhance the guest experience by fostering a sense of responsibility and connection to the natural world.

AC: Grupo Xcaret’s Sea Turtle Conservation initiative has helped, protected, and released over 19 million hatchlings into the wild. What role do partnerships and community engagement play in the success of your conservation efforts?

IMRC: Collaboration is everything. We work with local communities, NGOs, and government agencies to protect nesting beaches, educate the public, and provide resources for long-term success. Community engagement ensures that conservation becomes a shared responsibility, with locals actively participating in protecting these species. Partnerships amplify our impact and help sustain these efforts for generations.

AC: In your experience, what are the biggest misconceptions about integrating sustainability into luxury hospitality, and how does Hotel Xcaret Arte challenge those misconceptions?

IMRC: One misconception is that sustainability means compromising on comfort or luxury. At Hotel Xcaret Arte, we’ve proven the opposite—our eco-integrative approach enhances the guest experience by connecting them with nature and culture in an authentic way. Sustainability and luxury can coexist when approached thoughtfully and holistically.

AC: Many luxury resorts aim for sustainability but fall short in execution. What advice would you give to hospitality leaders seeking to build truly sustainable operations without compromising on guest experience?

IMRC: To build truly sustainable operations without compromising guest experience, it’s essential to incorporate sustainability criteria from the very beginning—starting in the design phase, not waiting until operations. This means planning for energy efficiency, water conservation systems, and eco-integrative architecture that minimizes environmental impact while enhancing the connection to nature. Engage experts, collaborate with local communities, and prioritize materials and practices that align with long-term sustainability goals. Additionally, be transparent about your efforts, involve your team in the process, and ensure every initiative adds value for both the environment and the guest experience. Sustainability isn’t a feature; it’s a foundation for the future of hospitality.

AC: The hospitality industry is a significant consumer of resources like energy and water. What innovations or practices do you believe will drive the industry toward more sustainable resource management in the next decade?

IMRC: Innovations like solar energy, advanced water recycling systems, and AI-driven resource management will play a key role. Equally important is adopting a circular economy mindset—repurposing waste, sourcing locally, and designing operations that minimize environmental impact. The industry must also prioritize guest education to inspire more conscious consumption.

AC: Cultural preservation is a key aspect of sustainability. How can other hotels and resorts adopt similar approaches to celebrate local heritage while supporting the livelihoods of Indigenous artisans and communities?

IMRC: Start by building genuine relationships with local artisans and communities. Showcase their work and stories in meaningful ways and give them the main role, it is their heritage and their story. Commit to fair compensation and long-term collaboration. When cultural preservation is authentic and respectful, it becomes a powerful tool for sustainability and community empowerment.
