Women Leading Real Estate: The Story Behind Villa Vie

Villa Vie’s story began in 1982, when Françoise Maujean founded the agency in the north of Mauritius. What started as one woman’s venture gradually grew into a family business. Nearly three decades later, in 2011, her daughter, Sophie Hardy, joined Villa Vie, bringing a new perspective and the desire to develop the agency’s activities further.

As the Mauritian property market evolved, Villa Vie evolved with it. New ways of searching for property emerged, international interest in Mauritius grew and, in 2016, the agency expanded into property sales to international buyers.

More than 40 years after Françoise first opened the agency, Villa Vie remains a family business rooted in the north of Mauritius. Today, its team is also made up entirely of women.

From Mother to Daughter

Sophie’s arrival marked a new chapter for the agency, but not a departure from what had come before.

The values established by Françoise remained at the heart of the business: transparency, professionalism, kindness and strong ethics. What changed was the environment around them and the opportunities that came with it.

Over the years, Sophie helped develop Villa Vie’s activities and strengthen its digital and international presence, while maintaining the personal approach on which the agency had been built.

Today, the two generations bring different experiences and perspectives to the business. One carries more than four decades of knowledge and relationships; the other has helped adapt that experience to a changing property market.

Together, they have allowed Villa Vie to move forward without losing sight of where it began.

Rooted in the North of Mauritius

Villa Vie has worked in the region for more than four decades, during which time its towns, neighbourhoods and property market have changed considerably. New residential areas have emerged, international buyers have become an important part of the market, and expectations around property have evolved.

Having grown alongside these changes has given Villa Vie an in-depth understanding of the North that comes from experience: knowing its different areas, understanding how the market has developed and building long-standing relationships with owners and clients.

Today, that experience extends beyond the North, with the team also accompanying clients looking for homes and investment opportunities in the West, East and South of the island.

It is knowledge that has been accumulated over time and is now shared not only between generations, but throughout the team.

A Team of Women

Today, women are involved in every part of Villa Vie, from sales and rentals to administration, marketing and communication.

Each brings her own personality, experience and strengths. Some are meeting clients and visiting properties, while others are managing contracts, coordinating communication, or making sure the many details behind a transaction are taken care of.

Because behind every successful property project is a considerable amount of teamwork.

There are conversations, visits, negotiations, photographs, contracts, and follow-ups. Each person has a different role to play, but everyone works towards the same goal: understanding what the client is looking for and helping them find the property that is right for them.

Villa Vie did not set out to build an all-female team. It happened naturally as the agency grew. Today, however, it has become a meaningful part of its identity: different women, with different roles and experiences, contributing to the same family business.

Keeping Real Estate Human

That sense of teamwork ultimately serves something even more important: the people behind each property project.

Buying, selling or renting a home is rarely just a transaction. A client may be moving to Mauritius, returning to the island, searching for a family home, selling a property filled with memories, or making an important investment.

These moments require property knowledge, but they also require listening, patience, and trust.

For Villa Vie, that human side of real estate has always been essential.

Sometimes the right advice is to move forward with a property. Sometimes it is to continue looking. What matters is being transparent and helping clients make decisions that are right for them.

Perhaps this is also why many relationships have continued beyond a single transaction. Over the years, clients have returned to Villa Vie for new property projects, entrusted the agency with their homes and recommended it to family and friends.

For Françoise, that loyalty remains one of the most meaningful measures of success:

“Our clients’ loyalty is our greatest achievement.”

Continuing the Story

More than 40 years after Villa Vie began, much has changed.

The Mauritian property market has evolved. The way clients discover properties has changed. The agency itself has grown and welcomed a new generation.

But the foundations remain much the same.

There is something meaningful about seeing the business Françoise created in 1982 being carried forward by Sophie and, today, by an entirely female team.

Each generation brings its own ideas, and each member of the team brings something different to the agency. Together, they continue to build on more than four decades of experience while looking towards what comes next.

Villa Vie’s story is still being written – by the women who are part of it today and those who will carry it forward tomorrow. Visit http://www.villa-vie.com/ to learn more about the Luxury Lifestyle Awards winner today.
