Ile Aux Cerfs translates from French as ‘the island of deer’, which gets to the heart of its Edenic tranquillity. Half-conserved and half-constructed, this golf-centered getaway is as brilliant a concept as it is a destination. Designed in semi-retirement by the old pro-Bernhard Langer, the course is a 19-hole sanctuary plotted just offshore from the easternmost point of the Mauritian mainland. So if you’re wondering: yes, this would perhaps be the only round you’d ever get to play after disembarking from a boat at the first tee.
It’s no surprise then that the club’s many accolades include being ranked No.1 in the list of ‘Top-20 Golf Courses to play once in your lifetime’ compiled by Golf World magazine, making Golfscape’s list of the Top 100 courses of the world, being voted Best Golf Club in Mauritius three years in a row by Golfers’ Choice, and most recently earning a 2022 Luxury Lifestyle Award in the Luxury Golf Estate category. Colin Montgomerie left the best benediction though by calling Ile Aux Cerfs a “must play” after trying just one round.
Each hole on the course has a minimum of 4 Tee decks (‘Langer’, ‘Championship’, ‘Tournament’, and ‘Forward’) while the first tee-off starts at 07h30 with twilight rates commencing from 15h00. And even if you’re the type of traveler who requires an exorbitant handicap, the island’s Golf Academy Studio and Practice Facility are nearby to help save your style from yourself (along with the Golf Pro Shop in case you left your clubs in the wrong hemisphere).
But of course, Ile Aux Cerfs would not have the renown it has without stellar relaxation facilities to go with its recreational ones. Perhaps the best incentive for playing a brisk round in the tropics would be the choice of midday or twilight watering holes for afters: either La Flibuste, a seafood bistro on a private beach with butler service, sunbeds and colorful parasols to match the ones in your cocktails, or Langer’s Bar & Grill, the course clubhouse at the 18th hole which doubles as a Mauritian specialty restaurant and a pilgrimage for drinks-lovers everywhere.
And if you want to extend your visit beyond just a few weekend rounds, you can choose to stay on in one of the course’s own uniquely-fashioned Bubble Lodge pods or seek refuge at any of our partnering coastal resorts, from Long Beach to Ambre, La Pirogue to Sugar Beach.
