The conversation is guided by Alexander Chetchikov, President of the World Luxury Chamber of Commerce and long-time leader of the Luxury Lifestyle Awards.

Alexander Chetchikov: Congratulations on being named among the TOP 100 Hotel General Managers of the World for 2025. What does this recognition mean to you personally and professionally?
Joseph Della Gatta: It’s an incredible recognition for me personally, and one that I feel deeply grateful for. At the same time, it’s certainly not something I have achieved alone. Throughout my career, I’ve been fortunate to work alongside some truly incredible people and teams, all of whom have played an important role in shaping my personal and professional journey.
I believe hospitality is very much a team effort, and every experience, challenge, and success along the way has been a collective one. I’ve learned so much from the people around me over the years, and I continue to do so every day.
This recognition is therefore not just a reflection of my own journey, but also of the many talented individuals who have supported, inspired, and grown alongside me throughout the years.
AC: Radisson Blu Resort Maldives is celebrated for its private island concept. What do you believe makes this resort stand out from other luxury destinations in the Maldives?
JDG: Every resort in the Maldives has its own unique charm because of the one-island-one-resort concept. For us, the key is really identifying and celebrating what makes our destination truly special. At Radisson Blu Resort Maldives, one of our greatest strengths is our location in the beautiful South Ari Atoll.
This part of the Maldives is world-renowned for year-round whale shark sightings and offers some of the most incredible diving and snorkeling experiences in the country. What makes it even more special is that many of the dive sites remain relatively untouched, allowing guests to experience a rich and vibrant underwater world in a very natural way. It’s not uncommon to encounter whale sharks, manta rays, nurse sharks, sea turtles, and an incredible diversity of marine life all within the same destination.
For guests seeking authentic marine adventures combined with luxury hospitality, it really is an extraordinary place to discover.

AC: You have led hospitality teams across Australia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific. How has your global experience shaped your leadership style in the Maldives?
JDG: I believe great leadership is really about understanding people; their cultures, personalities, perspectives, and what motivates them individually. In a diverse environment like the Maldives, you work with team members from many different backgrounds and generations, so it’s important to be adaptable, empathetic, and open-minded.
For me, leadership is about recognising those nuances and creating an environment where everyone feels valued, respected, and inspired to grow. I’m constantly learning alongside my team, and I think that willingness to evolve together is one of the most important qualities of a strong leader.
When you genuinely respect and celebrate differences, you build a culture where people feel connected, motivated, and proud of what they achieve together.
AC: Guest satisfaction at the resort has reached record-breaking levels. What key strategies or philosophies have contributed most to this success?
JDG: At the heart of exceptional hospitality is truly understanding our guests — not just where they come from, but also their cultural values, preferences, and what matters most to them when they travel. Every guest experiences luxury differently, so it’s important for us to be thoughtful, respectful, and intuitive in the way we deliver service.
We invest a great deal of effort into understanding what different guest profiles are looking for and, most importantly, anticipating their needs before they even have to ask. Those small, personalized touches are often what create the most memorable experiences.
Of course, none of this is possible without a passionate and dedicated team. Our team is genuinely committed to ensuring every guest leaves with memories of a once-in-a-lifetime experience, and that shared focus on creating meaningful moments is what continues to drive very high levels of guest satisfaction.

JDG: My background in restaurants and bars has played a significant role in shaping both my leadership style and my approach to personalised service. The R&B environment is incredibly fast-paced, and success often comes down to understanding individual preferences, paying attention to detail, and creating meaningful guest interactions in the moment.
That experience has naturally translated across all areas of resort operations. Luxury hospitality today is very much about personalisation, consistency, and anticipating guest expectations, regardless of the touchpoint.
What makes it truly seamless is working alongside like-minded team members who share the same passion and commitment to delivering exceptional service. When the entire team is focused on creating genuine, personalised experiences for every guest, it elevates the overall journey and ensures a consistently high standard throughout the resort.
AC: You often emphasize that people are the cornerstone of success. How do you build and motivate high-performance teams in such a dynamic resort environment?
JDG: I try to approach every day and every situation as a learning opportunity — both for myself and for my team. I strongly believe in accountability and ownership, and I feel people perform at their very best when they are empowered to use their expertise, make decisions confidently, and take pride in what they do.
As a leader, my role is to provide guidance and support while also giving my heads of department the trust and space they need to thrive. I like to think of myself as a safety net for the team — they know I’m always available whenever they need support, advice, or direction, but I also respect their knowledge and capabilities.
For me, building trust and mutual respect is essential. When you create that kind of environment, people naturally play to their strengths, collaborate more effectively, and ultimately deliver stronger results together.

AC: Sustainability and authenticity are increasingly important to luxury travelers. How does Radisson Blu Resort Maldives align with these evolving guest expectations?
JDG: Sustainability is something we take very seriously at the resort — it’s genuinely part of our DNA and not simply a marketing message. We are fortunate to operate in one of the world’s most extraordinary marine environments, so we believe we have a responsibility to actively protect and preserve it for future generations.
One of the initiatives we are especially proud of is our long-term partnership with the Maldives Whale Shark Research Programme. Thanks to our unique location in South Ari Atoll, where whale sharks can be spotted throughout the year, the resort serves as an important base for their ongoing research efforts. This includes studying whale shark migration patterns, identification, and understanding their behaviour in greater detail. It’s incredibly meaningful for us to contribute to scientific research that supports marine conservation in the Maldives.
We are also very focused on coral regeneration and reef restoration. Through our coral planting programme, guests are invited to participate directly in rebuilding the reef ecosystem, which creates both awareness and a deeper connection to the destination. We also keep guests updated on the progress of the coral they have planted, which makes the experience even more rewarding and personal.
Beyond this, sustainability is integrated into many aspects of our daily operations, from bottling our own drinking water and reusing heat energy to water conservation initiatives across the island. Most importantly, all of our team members are encouraged and empowered to contribute ideas and take ownership of sustainable practices because creating a more responsible future is something we believe should involve everyone.
AC: Looking to the future, what is your vision for the future of Radisson Blu Resort Maldives and the role it will play in reconceiving luxury island experiences?
JDG: I would like the resort and our team to be recognised for delivering truly personalised and thoughtfully curated experiences — the kind of service where we genuinely understand what matters most to each individual guest and consistently deliver on those expectations in a meaningful way.
For us, it goes far beyond the commercial aspect of hospitality. It’s about creating authentic connections and ensuring every guest feels welcomed, valued, and emotionally connected to both the resort and the people behind the experience. When you achieve that, guests don’t just visit once — they return again and again because they feel a genuine sense of belonging.
At the same time, we want to be recognised for the way we approach sustainability and responsible luxury. Our goal is to create experiences that are memorable not only for our guests, but also positive for the destination itself. Ultimately, we hope to leave a lasting legacy in South Ari Atoll — one built on exceptional hospitality, meaningful guest connections, and a strong commitment to protecting the natural beauty of the Maldives for future generations.

Thank you, Joseph, for sharing your insights, leadership philosophy, and vision, and congratulations once again on this well-deserved global recognition.
