Exclusive Interview: The Vision Behind Bellen Athens Hotel’s Award-Winning Success

Behind every exceptional hotel is a leader who understands that true luxury is not measured by grandeur, but by the ability to create meaningful, memorable experiences. For Evangelos Voumvoulakis, COO of Yestay Hotels and General Manager of Bellen Athens Hotel, hospitality has been a lifelong passion shaped by curiosity, craftsmanship, and a deep appreciation for human connection. Beginning his career in the culinary world and gaining hands-on experience across every facet of food and beverage operations, Evangelos developed a comprehensive understanding of what it takes to deliver excellence. Today, he channels that expertise into cultivating a hotel experience where personalization, authenticity, and attention to detail define every guest journey.

That philosophy comes to life at Bellen Athens Hotel, an intimate luxury boutique retreat in the heart of Athens’ vibrant Psyrri district. Since opening its doors in 2024, the 22-room property has distinguished itself through a refreshingly intentional approach to hospitality, offering bespoke concierge experiences, ancient Greek-inspired wellness rituals, and a level of personal service rarely found in larger hotels. This commitment to creating deeply individual experiences has earned Bellen Athens Hotel the prestigious title of Best Luxury Boutique Hotel in Athens, Greece, 2026, from Luxury Lifestyle Awards. We spoke with Evangelos Voumvoulakis about his professional journey, the vision behind Bellen Athens, and the future of boutique luxury in one of Europe’s most captivating destinations.

Alexander Chetchikov, President of the World Luxury Chamber of Commerce and leader of LLA, leads our interview with Evangelos.

Alexander Chetchikov: Congratulations on Bellen Athens Hotel being named Best Luxury Boutique Hotel in Athens, Greece, 2026. What does this recognition mean to you and your team?

EV: Thank you. This recognition is an honor and, above all, a reflection of our people. At Bellen Athens Hotel, luxury is not something we define through aesthetics alone; it is expressed through care, consistency, and meaningful human connection.

Receiving this award validates a philosophy we have embraced from day one: creating experiences that feel personal, authentic, and memorable. For our team, this distinction is motivation to continue raising the standards of boutique hospitality in Greece while staying true to who we are.

AC: Bellen Athens operates under the philosophy that every guest is “THE ONE.” How does this philosophy influence the guest experience from arrival to departure?

EV: At Bellen Athens, “THE ONE” means that every guest should feel seen, understood, and genuinely welcomed, not treated as a room number or reservation.

This philosophy influences every stage of the journey, from pre-arrival communication and personalized recommendations to tailored concierge experiences and thoughtful details during the stay. We aim to anticipate needs rather than react to requests.

Luxury today is not excess; it is relevance. When a guest leaves feeling that their experience could not have happened anywhere else, then we have succeeded.

AC: In today’s digital-first travel landscape, a hotel’s online presence often creates the first impression for potential guests. Bellen Athens Hotel has recently strengthened its visibility through platforms such as Instagram and Facebook. How important is social media in communicating the hotel’s identity, and what impact have you seen from these efforts so far?

EV: Social media has become an extension of hospitality. It is often the first interaction a future guest has with our brand.

For us, platforms such as Instagram and Facebook are not simply marketing tools; they are storytelling platforms. We use them to communicate atmosphere, emotion, and the values behind the Bellen experience.

The impact has been significant. Beyond visibility, we have built stronger engagement with international audiences and attracted travelers who connect with our philosophy before they even arrive in Athens.

AC: Luxury travelers’ expectations continue to evolve. What do you believe today’s discerning guests value most when choosing a boutique hotel experience, and how is Bellen Athens responding to those expectations?

EV: Today’s luxury traveler values authenticity, privacy, personalization, and emotional connection.

Guests increasingly seek places with character and purpose rather than standardized experiences. At Bellen Athens, we respond through intimate service, curated local experiences, design that reflects our destination, and a team culture centered on genuine hospitality.

Our objective is simple: every guest should feel that their stay was designed specifically for them.

AC: The hotel is known for providing highly personalized experiences, including private Acropolis tours and exclusive cultural access. How important is authentic local immersion in today’s luxury travel landscape?

EV: Authentic local immersion is no longer optional; it is one of the defining elements of modern luxury.

Travelers want access to the real identity of a destination. Through curated cultural experiences, private explorations, gastronomy, and meaningful local connections, we help guests experience Athens beyond the expected.

We believe true luxury is creating stories that remain with people long after they return home.

AC: Wellness has become an essential aspect of luxury hospitality. Can you tell us more about Bellen Athens Hotel’s spa concept and how ancient Greek traditions inspire the wellness experience?

EV: Our wellness philosophy is inspired by the timeless Greek understanding of balance between body, mind, and spirit.

We designed our wellness experiences to encourage restoration rather than escape. Ancient Greek influences, sensory rituals, calm environments, and intentional moments of stillness allow guests to reconnect with themselves while staying immersed in the energy of Athens.

For us, wellness is not an additional service; it is part of the overall guest journey.

AC: With growing interest from travelers in the USA and the Middle East, how is Bellen Athens Hotel positioning itself to attract and serve these international markets while maintaining its intimate boutique character?

EV: Our intimate scale is not a limitation when serving international markets, it is our greatest advantage. Because we are small, we can adapt to each guest’s culture, expectations, and rhythm in a way that larger hotels simply cannot.

Travelers from the USA and the Middle East value discretion, privacy, and genuine cultural understanding. We respond with multilingual, culturally fluent service, flexibility in how and when our guests prefer to experience the city, and an attention to detail that respects where they come from while immersing them in Athens.

For us, strengthening our international presence does not mean becoming larger or more standardized, it means becoming more thoughtful. The more diverse our guests, the more our boutique character allows us to make every stay feel entirely their own.

AC: And lastly, what is your vision for the future of Bellen Athens Hotel, and how do you see the property continuing to elevate the standard of boutique luxury in Greece?

EV: Our vision is to establish Bellen Athens as a reference point for contemporary boutique luxury in Greece and internationally.

We want to continue evolving through innovation, deeper personalization, and experiences that create lasting emotional value.

At a personal level, I also believe that no achievement is ever individual. I would like to express my sincere appreciation to Richard Panopoulos, CEO of Yestay Group, for the trust, support, and belief he continues to show in me. In an industry that is highly demanding and intensely competitive, having leaders who empower people makes all the difference. His vision and confidence create the conditions for turning ambitious goals—and ultimately dreams—into reality.

Our journey is only beginning.

Thank you, Evangelos, for sharing your insights and congratulations once again on Bellen Athens Hotel’s remarkable achievement.
