B+H & CHIL Interior Design Create One-of-a-Kind Hospitality Experience for Resort in China

Global, award-winning consulting and design solutions firm, B+H, together with CHIL Interior Design, the luxury hospitality and residential design studio of B+H, have been awarded Best Luxury Hotel Interior Design for the Greenland Primus Resort Sanya in Hainan, China by the Luxury Lifestyle Awards. Founded in 1953 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, B+H provides core architecture, planning, landscape, interior design and experiential design services as well as Advance Strategy and Biomimicry consulting services. Collaborating across 12 studios in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal, Seattle, Los Angeles, San Diego, Dubai, Shanghai, Shenzhen, Hong Kong, Singapore & Ho Chi Minh City, B+H lives to design bold and inspiring spaces for people and believe that strategic design starts with careful listening and insight.

The award-winning Sanya Primus Hotel was designed in collaboration by B+H and CHIL Interior Design and is located in Sanya, Hainan Province, China. The project is described as “A pearl nestled along the coast of Yuelan Bay”.

Situated in Yuelan Bay with a mountain backdrop, the Greenland Primus Resort Sanya provides modern travelers a peaceful and relaxing retreat away from the hustle and bustle on Hainan Island, also known as the “Hawaii of the East”.

The property is divided into two parts, with a beach resort to the west and separate apartments to the east, connected by shared public amenities. Guestroom and apartment wings emanate from either side of the lobby maximizing the scenic views from each room. The space combines local cultural influences with contemporary, minimalist stylings, offering a unique tropical experience for guests.

The design concept is uniquely inspired by  the pearl. China’s long and rich history with pearls dates back 4000 years. Hainan Pearls were recognized and widespread, dating back to the Qin Dynasty (221 to 206 BC) with its abundant pearl production on the island.  Throughout history, pearls were widely used in ornaments, fine jewelry, medicine, and beauty products, a practice that continues to thrive in the region today.

B+H & CHIL Interior Design’s work aims to captivate and inspire guests when they step onto the property for the first time. The design team wanted to emulate the special moment when human beings first discovered the pearl that lies within the oyster.

The unique locale inspired the designers to integrate traditional cultural elements with classic Chinese motifs in unusual ways: materials, textures, and patterns inspired by the jewelry, accessories, and pottery from the local Li & Miaoculture.

Furniture and fixtures in the living zones are customized and personalized specifically for the client and feature the elegant and meticulous silhouettes associated with the Primus Brand. The suites are comprised of a collection of rich and luxurious materials such as marble countertops, warm wood veneer, and reflective polish found in the furniture and millwork details.

Design elements for the guest suites are inspired by the project’s beautiful and natural context and are given a luxurious interpretation which leave guests feeling as though they’ve discovered a rare treasure. Public areas echo the design themes in the living zones, promoting an overall experience of relaxation and rejuvenation.

The landscape design strikes a careful balance between nature and the property. The team takes cues from the surrounding coastline topography and culture, merging the vastness of the southern China sea with the rough rocks and mountains along the coast.

Sustainability and resilience are of utmost importance to the firm. The overall landscape design embeds the guest experience and amenities within a sustainable environment that is connected both to nature and the local culture. Water is an important element frequently used in the landscape design, and it ties the interior and exterior of the site together through a variety of conditions: quiet ponds, flowing fountains, natural streams, and themed pools, all of which flow through the different spaces of the property.
