7 Latest Trends in Interior Design 2023

With every new year comes a new set of interior design styles and trends that take the world by storm and 2023 is shaping up to be no different. From luxurious and chic designs that exude opulence to more minimalist styles that focus on functionality, there is something for everyone in the world of interior design. So, if you are looking to update whether it be for your home’s style or business spaces this year, read on to learn about the top 7 interior design trends, that are set to take over in 2023, according to Luxury Lifestyle Awards.

1

Organic Material and Plant-Filled Spaces

The biophilia trend emphasizes bringing aspects of nature into the home to create visually stunning and more liveable spaces. From natural-looking colors and materials, such as wood, bronze, and stone, to greenery added to the interior design landscape through plants and other foliage, there is an increased appreciation for all things related to Mother Nature. This trend is gaining traction within the world of interior design.

Organic materials have also become increasingly popular in the use of home decor over the past several years, as they provide an aesthetic with timeless appeal.

Founder & Creative Director, Katie Malik, of Katie Malik Interior Design Studio went on to say that “As we need healthy food and exercise regularly, we also need ongoing connections with nature. An environment devoid of nature and organic materials can have a negative effect on health and well-being making it essential to include a variety of plant species in our homes. Although not every space can be designed to incorporate all the principles of biophilic design, natural light, vegetation, living walls, natural textures and materials and nature views will all provide a positive impact on our well-being and productivity.”

Warm neutrals, earth tones, and materials such as wool, cotton, silk, rattan, and clay are important components of this look. If you’re aiming to bring the natural look elements into your home, consider using more raw materials than faux accents. Incorporating natural elements is an excellent way to create a timeless look in your space. Focus on the use of real materials such as light or mid-toned wood furniture, as well as natural area rugs crafted from nubby wool, jute, or textured cotton for added warmth and texture.

Claus Ditlev Jensen, Collection & Visuals Director of  BoConcept says that “Soft rounded shapes add flow, movement, and balance to our interiors. They create a feeling of home, and a sense of calm and serenity which is already so embedded in the BoConcept DNA, and Danish living in general.”

2

A Sustainable Future

As concerns for environmental impact increase, consumers are more mindful of their choices and the provenance behind them. This is fuelling a larger conversation around sustainable design, which is gaining recognition as an invaluable element in boosting market competitiveness. More and more often, people want to understand where and how items are produced. The vast majority of designers see sustainability as a long-term trend in 2023. Recycled materials and woods, natural light, and houseplants for air purification are among the top sustainability trends.

“We as architects have the responsibility to the future, by looking carefully at the designs of a building, and the proper choice of materials used, to reduce the amount of energy and resources consumed during construction. Some ways of achieving this include protecting as much as we can of our surrounding nature, planting trees and creating a landscape that is suited to the local weather conditions, and opting to rather use sustainable materials to reduce our carbon footprint.” Says Kristina Bråteng, Founder and CEO of B8 Architecture.

Interior sustainability involves meeting our current needs without compromising future generations’ ability to do the same. Sustainable interior design considers the environment and utilizes recycled materials, striving to reduce its negative effects while increasing occupant health, and comfort, and concentrating on eco-friendly design.

Interior designers should put sustainability at the forefront of their work, as it is important for maintaining ecosystems and quality of life. By incorporating eco-friendly solutions such as green materials, energy efficiency can be improved – a priority before fossil fuels run out. Sustainability must be taken seriously and become an integral part of any interior design project.

3

Pinch Of The 1980s

The 80s were known for their unique interior design style from chintz and pastels to open kitchens and preppy style. It appears these styles have come back into fashion. If you’re interested in bringing a bit of nostalgia into your home, now is the perfect time! You can combine modern interior design features with updated 80s-inspired elements to create something new and exciting. With a little creativity, you can revive yesterday’s trends without sacrificing the contemporary look of your space. All in all, while some trends may come and go, certain aspects of the 80s era will continue to stand the test of time.

4

The Return of Color

Following the neutral colors we’ve seen in recent years, 2023 is set to bring color back into home decor and furnishing. Delight in a lavish array of deep jewel tones, gentle greens, warmth-inducing earth hues, and classic blues. Splash your powder bathroom with wallpaper, let your dining room or office show off a vibrant wall color, and introduce inviting colors to your living space through accessories and decorations. Also, give layered bedding with several colors a go instead of settling for one solid shade, don’t be hesitant on trying out various prints either!

“Bold color is in! As we continue to devote more time in our homes, in the wake of a pandemic, we find ourselves in an interesting time with color.  With the COVID-19 threat, people turned to safe, comforting colors and tones, in neutrals and lime-wash finishes.  In the brave new world of celebratory Survivalism, people are embracing color in a heroic way. Gone are the days of banal tone-on-tone mausoleums in exchange for exciting and bold hues.  Punchy wallpapers and murals, tiles parading as watercolor paintings and vivid-toned patterns are owning the current color wheel.  As a fan of boldness, I can’t say I am not exceedingly pleased, my only advice is to use it with caution. Balance never goes out of style!” Says Jessica Neilas, President & Creative Director of WOLFE Interior Design.

5

Bold Patterns

Patterns are making a big impact in 2023, with floral prints, tropical vibes, and geometric patterns being popular. Traditional, cultural, and innovative influences are all shaping self-expression in interior design. Patterns can add visual interest and often serve as the focal point for a space. They foster a sense of energy and dimension that are difficult to achieve with color alone. When done well, patterns have the power to transform any space or object into quite a showstopper with rich and distinctive interests.

6

Statement-Making, Iconic Designs Hold Sway

Adding wall prints and select pieces of furniture to your living space can be an efficient and cost-effective means of augmenting the area’s style. Regardless of the room, wall art is a great way to create an inviting atmosphere. For example, use a collection of black and white wall prints on white walls for a contemporary vibe that can blend in with many interior designs. Transform your bedroom or work area with stylish wall art, it’s easy and affordable!

“As hospitality Interior Designers, my designers and I have a duty to create timeless designs, and iconic interiors that don’t look out of date within 6 months of opening, however, that does not mean remaining in the past with tried and tested ideas. A designer’s classic piece of furniture blended into modern aesthetics can transform an interior whilst keeping the design timeless.” Says Warren Foster-Brown, Managing Director of FBEYE International.

7

Avoid The High Shine

Designers agree that glossy finishes are still one of the most unpopular trends in kitchen design, despite occasional attempts to revive the style. When considering a remodel, designers suggest steering clear of glossy kitchen surfaces. The grain and texture of materials such as crown-cut oak, ash veneers, brushed metals, honed stone, and concrete surfaces have become more popular in recent years for kitchen designs. The muted feel of matte finishes has taken precedence over the brighter sheen associated with gloss finishes. For those looking to create something new and daring, introducing one of these modern textured finishes can be a bold statement. However, it is important to bear in mind that trends may come and go quickly; while fluted and textured kitchen ideas are popular now, these choices may not remain fashionable in years to come.

Undoubtedly, 2023 is looking to be a year of change when it comes to the industry of interior design. The Luxury Lifestyle Interior Design Awards winners all agree that the biggest trend we are seeing is a move away from traditional styles and migration towards more modern and contemporary looks.
