When it comes to interior design, there are many routes to explore. In a way, there are almost too many. With all the options out there, it has become easier and easier to go down as many avenues as possible, but this can lead to some problems. Consistency is key. While it can be fun to take on every room with a completely blank canvas for each one, it isn’t exactly the best method to attain some coherency.
This is important because a home should tell a story. As with any story, there should be a central theme. You want one room to lead you to the next one, like they are all connected by a single piece of string. This doesn’t mean you have to compromise either. If your budget is high and you wanted to get a particular type of leather sofa, then this is still entirely feasible. If your budget is low, and you wanted to go for cheap laminate floors, then you can still do this, so long as you are smart with your other flooring within the house. The important part is that you keep a sense of the picture as a whole.
So how can you find a theme for your home? Here are five tips that could help you in your interior design project.
Choose Your Style
First off, it’s important to take the time and choose the style you would like for your home. This involves walking through the house as it is now and visualising what you want it to be. Think about your guests and family who will be visiting, but also think about yourself. You are the one who will be living in that space, so you want it to be an extension of you and your personality.
Repeat Colour Pallets
While it can be tempting to go for a completely different colour for each room, it will not lead to a coherent household. With a range of different ideas trying to coexist on one page, it will doubtless just end up looking messy. Choose a particular colour pallet and infuse it with every room. If you still wanted to have a bit of fun, then this can be done in the bedrooms. Ask yourself, your partner, or your children, what colour best reflects their personality, then paint the bedroom accordingly. This can help everyone get involved with the project and ensure that parts of your personality appear in the colour schemes of the house.
Repeat Wood Types
This point can occasionally be overlooked, but it is very important to have the same floor throughout the household. As mentioned before, if you have a slightly lower budget and you wanted to install cheap laminate flooring in the living room but a more expensive one in the kitchen, then you should refrain from doing this. Whether it’s the floor in the kitchen, the dining room, or the bedroom, having the same flooring will ultimately affect the feel of the house, helping to keep a sense of coherence beneath your feet.
Choose Your Materials With Coherency In Mind
In order to add another piece of subtle coherency, it can be a good idea to string together your materials. This can be done in many ways. For instance, if you have your heart set on a particular type of leather armchair, then make sure the leather of the sofa matches. If you have brass bathroom taps, then make sure they match the brass candle holders. There are many methods to infuse materials and make each room look pleasing to the eye.
Quality Over Quantity
It can be easy to go crazy with your interior design, but it is important to remember that quality speaks volumes over quantity. You do not want to pack out your home with a variety of interior décor ideas. Instead, try to go for a more finite range of ideas which will stretch your budget a bit. Whilst it may seem counterintuitive, you will come to appreciate it down the line. Remember, this is a home which you might be staying in for the rest of your life. You want to be surrounded by a design and decor that you appreciate and love.
