Transforming Spaces: Akl Architects’ Award-Winning Design for Law Firm Office in Saudi Arabia

Akl Architects

In a rapidly evolving legal landscape, the Latham and Watkins office in Riyadh is an outstanding example of how thoughtful design can elevate a workspace. Akl Architects, an award-winning Lebanese architecture firm, undertook a significant renovation of this reputable law firm and garnered a Luxury Lifestyle Awards for Best Luxury Office Interior Design in Saudi Arabia 2024. Completed in October 2023, this project exemplifies Akl Architects’ ambition to create bespoke environments that cater to the specific needs of their clients.

The renovation journey began in January 2023, when Latham and Watkins seized the opportunity to expand its footprint. After renting half of the office space to an electronics company for a decade, the law firm made a strategic decision to take possession of the entire floor, allowing for a more cohesive and expansive working environment.

Akl Architects’ innovative approach to the renovation was driven by the need to enhance both functionality and aesthetic appeal. The design team created a concept that transforms the office into a collaborative hub tailored to the requirements of the distinguished legal minds that inhabit it. Central to this vision was the creation of two “hearts” within the office layout. Each hub was designed to include workstations, cafeteria areas, and service zones, strategically positioned to encourage interaction and collaboration among team members.

The office layout reflects a thoughtful balance between individual focus and group engagement. Surrounding the central hubs are the private offices for partners, administrators, managers, consultants, and associates, ensuring that every team member is within close proximity to the hubs. This design promotes ease of communication and collaboration, vital in the high-stakes environment of legal work, where teamwork and efficiency are paramount.

One of the standout features of the renovation is the preservation and enhancement of the existing wood wall separators between the offices and corridors. Akl Architects retained these distinctive elements and transformed them into elegant strip wood wall separators. This preserved the aesthetic continuity of the office while introducing a modern touch that resonates with the overall design ethos of the renovation. The use of mixed wood finishes adds a sophisticated warmth to the environment, creating a beautiful interplay of tradition and modernity.

Lighting plays a crucial role in the overall ambiance of the renovated office, particularly in the central lounge. Here, Akl Architects implemented a dramatic lighting design that creates a stunning effect, drawing attention to the seating area while providing a warm, inviting glow. This innovative use of lighting enhances the visual appeal of the lounge, making it an engaging area for informal meetings and relaxation. The interplay of light and shadow adds depth and dimension to the space, transforming it into a focal point within the office.

The renovated Latham and Watkins office in Riyadh is a stunning example of Akl Architects’ thoughtful design philosophy, creating a world-class working environment that enhances the ability of its lawyers to deliver exceptional legal services. The integration of central hubs, the preservation of wood wall separators, and the strategic office layout all contribute to a cohesive and functional workspace.

The client’s desire to integrate two architectural styles while maintaining minimal disruption to the existing space was met with finesse. Akl Architects’ focus on creating communal spaces between offices resulted in a luxurious, comfortable, and minimalist atmosphere that fosters collaboration and innovation. The unique blend of different wood types and finishes further enhances the office’s aesthetic appeal, embodying the luxurious yet functional spirit the client envisioned.

In addition to this prestigious award, Akl Architects has received accolades for their sustainability efforts, ranking third in the Holcim Award for Sustainability in the Middle East and Africa in 2023. Their Lattouf Residence project also won the Arabian Property Award for 2023-2024.

Akl Architects’ renovation of Latham and Watkins’s Riyadh office exemplifies how luxury interior design can enhance functionality and aesthetic appeal in a corporate environment. By creating a dynamic workspace that fosters collaboration, preserving key design elements, and integrating innovative lighting solutions, Akl Architects has set a new standard for office design in Saudi Arabia.
