Historical Grandhotel Sauerhof Building is Brought Back to Life with a Contemporary Take of Classic Baroque Style

Luxury Lifestyle Awards has awarded luxury architect and interior design studio Wolf Reicht Architects Best Luxury Hotel Architecture 2021 for its outstanding work at Grandhotel Sauerhof in Austria.

Grandhotel Sauerhof is a classic display of Austria’s high-caliber architecture, now combining elements of classic baroque with a more contemporary, understated tone. Its size and grand design come together to create a sense of majestic elegance for visitors that pull up to this top establishment’s regal entrance.

Nestled in the vicinity of Arnulf Rainer Museum in the centre of Baden city, Grandhotel Sauerhof has 88 rooms. It also has a restaurant, a bar, a conference room, a coffee shop, an indoor swimming pool and a fitness gym.

The building that is Grandhotel Sauerhof has a rich history, dating back to the 12th century. Records show that Emperor Maximilian II, a member of the Austrian House of Habsburg and a Holy Roman Emperor, purchased the property as a residence for his son, Emperor Rudolf II. In 1683, the residence was left to ruins as a result of the second siege of Vienna by Turkey, but was revived in 1697.

In 1820, the building became the hotel establishment it is today. It is believed that Ludwig van Beethoven was once a guest at the facility before it was used as a military hospital for a number of years. In 1976, Willi and Roswitha Schorn, owners of the Würzburg travel agency Klinger, purchased the building, and it once again was repurposed into a hotel.

Kyatt Group currently owns the building following their acquisition of it in 2015. At the time, they pronounced that they would undertake renovation of the facility in order to re-open it as a premium health hotel that would once again drive the health tourism industry of the area. It is on this basis that Wolf Reicht Architects was involved in this project.

The highly esteemed team at Wolf Reicht Architects are the genius behind some of the most inspiring designs in Austria, including Event Centre Metastadt, premium residential units in Salzburg, and other five-star hotels across the country. It was only fitting that they, too, would contribute their expertise to the renovation of this history-rich establishment.

Wolf Reicht Architects, which was founded in 2013 by Gnas-born Wolfgang Reicht, is well known for its versatility and individualistic approach to each project they embark on. This has been one of the key drivers of their success, underpinned by their willingness to embrace innovative thinking when it comes to creating their masterpieces.
