In the ever-evolving world of luxury hospitality, few establishments achieve the perfect harmony of timeless elegance and modern innovation quite like Hotel Carmichael, Autograph Collection. Recently crowned the Best Luxury Boutique Hotel in Indiana, USA for 2025 by Luxury Lifestyle Awards, this architectural gem in Carmel City Center continues to set new standards for bespoke hospitality.
In this exclusive conversation, Alexander Chetchikov, President of the World Luxury Chamber of Commerce, sits down with Jamie Hopwood, General Manager of Hotel Carmichael, to discuss the future of luxury, the role of technology in high-end hospitality, and what it takes to create an unforgettable boutique hotel experience. From the impact of digital transformation to the artistry behind Hotel Carmichael’s award-winning service, this insightful dialogue offers a rare glimpse into the heart of luxury travel’s next chapter.
Questions:
Alexander Chetchikov: The concept of luxury is evolving rapidly, shaped by shifting consumer expectations and global trends. In your view, what does “luxury” mean in 2025, and how has that definition changed over the years?
Jamie Hopwood: Currently the concept of luxury has evolved far beyond abundance and material exclusivity. Today, I would define luxury more closely to how an experience makes someone feel—it’s about creating moments that are deeply personal, memorable, and unlike anything else. It’s the thoughtful details, the quiet anticipation of a guest’s needs, and the delivery of service with style, class, and authenticity. More than ever, people seek experiences that feel curated just for them—something that transcends the expected. Luxury today means feeling seen, valued, and celebrated. It’s not about gold finishes or marble floors, but rather the emotional connection and elevated sense of belonging that only true hospitality can deliver. Over the years, we’ve seen a shift from luxury as status to luxury as experience. In 2025, it’s less about “having” and more about feeling. It’s about the way a space makes you pause, the way a team makes you feel welcome without words, and the way a stay lingers in your memory long after you leave. At the heart of this new definition is the ability to create something unique, something with soul and passion.
AC: Technology is revolutionizing the luxury hospitality industry, from AI-driven concierge services to immersive virtual experiences. How do you see digital transformation shaping the future of boutique hotels, and how can brands maintain a balance between high-tech innovation and high-touch personalization?
JH: Digital transformation is undeniably reshaping the landscape of luxury hospitality, particularly in the boutique space where personalization is everything. As technology continues to evolve, I believe the future lies in striking the right balance between high-tech efficiency and high-touch emotional connection.People inherently crave authentic human interaction—that emotional connection is at the heart of true hospitality. However, AI will play an increasingly important role in enhancing our ability to deliver personalized experiences. From recognizing guest preferences and streamlining communication to anticipating needs before a guest even articulates them, AI has the potential to elevate service in a way that feels intuitive and seamless. At the same time, we will see more practical applications of robotics, particularly in areas like cleaning, cooking, and even construction. These innovations will allow hotel teams to focus more on meaningful guest engagement, while technology handles the more repetitive, behind-the-scenes tasks.
AC: The boutique hotel experience is all about exclusivity and uniqueness. What trends do you believe will define the next generation of luxury boutique hospitality, and how can hotels stay ahead of the curve while remaining true to their identity?
JH: One major trend I see shaping the future is purpose-driven luxury—guests want to know their stay supports sustainability, inclusivity, and meaningful social impact. Boutique hotels are uniquely positioned to deliver on this because of their flexibility and deep connection to their surroundings.Another defining trend is the fusion of technology and storytelling. The best boutique hotels will use AI and data thoughtfully to anticipate guest needs, while still curating spaces and moments that feel handcrafted and deeply human. Immersive experiences—whether culinary, artistic, or wellness-focused—will continue to grow, as guests seek to be transported, not just accommodated.
AC: High-end brands often collaborate to enhance guest experiences – whether through exclusive partnerships with designers, artists, or culinary masters. How important is cross-industry collaboration in today’s luxury market, and what successful partnerships have inspired you?
JH: Cross-industry collaboration is essential in today’s luxury market—it elevates the guest experience and brings fresh, unexpected moments to life. Collaborations with designers, artists, and chefs add authenticity and create lasting impressions. I’m inspired by partnerships like St. Regis with Bentley or Bulgari with Michelin-starred chefs—each blending craftsmanship and storytelling seamlessly.
AC: Today’s affluent travelers are increasingly conscious of sustainability and ethical luxury. How do you see the luxury hospitality industry adapting to these values, and what challenges come with maintaining both exclusivity and sustainability?
JH: As I mentioned before, sustainability is no longer optional—it’s expected. Luxury hospitality is adapting by focusing on responsible sourcing, energy efficiency, and waste reduction without compromising elegance. The challenge lies in maintaining the sense of exclusivity while making ethical choices feel seamless and intentional. Sustainability is so important to us that from day one, Hotel Carmichael made the decision to send all of our waste to Covanta, where it is converted into a renewable energy source—turning trash into fuel to help power communities.
AC: Hotel Carmichael has been crowned the Best Luxury Boutique Hotel in Indiana, USA for 2025. What does this recognition mean to you and your team, and how does it reflect the vision and philosophy behind the hotel?
JH: We are truly honored and humbled by this recognition. Being named the Best Luxury Boutique Hotel in Indiana for 2025 is a testament to the unwavering dedication of our incredible team and the ongoing support of our exceptional ownership group. We are very lucky to be surrounded by individuals who are committed every day to delivering excellence. This award reflects our shared vision—to create an unforgettable, artfully curated experience that blends timeless elegance with heartfelt hospitality.
AC: Every luxury hotel has a signature element that sets it apart. What would you say is Hotel Carmichael’s most distinctive feature, and how do you ensure each guest experience feels truly exceptional?
JH: Hotel Carmichael’s most distinctive feature lies in its deep and elegant connection to the Great American Songbook—a timeless tribute to the golden era of music and storytelling. This connection is woven thoughtfully throughout the hotel’s design, creating an atmosphere that is both luxurious and soulful. From the curated artwork featuring legendary composers and performers to the subtle musical motifs found in architectural details, every corner of the hotel pays homage to the artistry that shaped a generation. This musical narrative extends beyond aesthetics. It influences the tone of hospitality itself—evoking the grace, rhythm, and charm reminiscent of a bygone era, yet brought to life through modern elegance. Whether it’s a quiet moment in the library, a performance at Feinstein’s, or simply the thoughtful cadence of a perfectly delivered guest experience, our goal is to ensure each guest feels like they are part of a beautifully orchestrated composition.
AC: Hotel Carmichael is deeply connected to Carmel’s thriving arts scene, from its neoclassical-inspired architecture to its cabaret performances at Feinstein’s. How does this cultural immersion enhance the guest experience, and what role does art play in defining your brand?
JH: Hotel Carmichael’s cultural identity is deeply rooted in the visionary leadership of former Mayor Jim Brainard, whose 28-year strategic development plan recognized that, without the natural landmarks of oceans or mountains, Carmel needed to build its identity around something equally powerful: the arts. Mayor Brainard’s commitment to creating a world-class city centered around culture and creativity laid the foundation for destinations like Hotel Carmichael. As a result, the hotel was thoughtfully designed to embody this vision—its neoclassical architecture, refined interiors, and musical soul are all a direct reflection of Carmel’s dedication to the arts. From live cabaret performances at Feinstein’s to curated art installations and musical details woven throughout the property, Hotel Carmichael offers guests more than just a luxurious stay—it offers a cultural immersion. This enhances the guest experience by creating a sense of place that is inspiring, expressive, and uniquely Carmel. Art plays a central role in defining our brand. It allows us to connect with guests on an emotional level, elevating the ordinary into something extraordinary. At Hotel Carmichael, every moment is designed to feel like a beautiful performance—evocative, elegant, and unforgettable.
AC: You’ve built a distinguished career in luxury hospitality. What inspired you to pursue this path, and what have been the most defining moments in your journey as a leader?
JH: My journey into luxury hospitality was truly shaped by a pivotal moment—and by an incredible mentor. I had the privilege of working with Linda McGill at the Marriott City Center, a leader who not only recognized potential but had a deep understanding of where it could thrive. When she left Marriott to join Rock Resorts, she recruited me to manage several properties in Beaver Creek, Colorado. That decision changed the trajectory of my career. It was in Beaver Creek that I fully realized the luxury segment was not only where I belonged, but where I could truly make an impact. The level of attention to detail, the personalization of service, and the emotional connection we create with guests all resonated deeply with me. Linda saw that before I did, and I’m forever grateful for her guidance. Since then, the most defining moments in my career have come from leading teams through transformation—elevating the guest experience while building a strong, purpose-driven culture. Luxury, for me, is not just about opulence; it’s about making people feel seen, valued, and inspired. That’s the standard I strive to uphold every day.
AC: With this prestigious award under your belt, what can guests and luxury travelers expect next from Hotel Carmichael? Are there any exciting projects, enhancements, or new experiences on the horizon?
JH: With this prestigious award under our belt, we are more inspired than ever to elevate the guest experience at Hotel Carmichael. We’re excited to share that we are expanding into the building next door, which will include 60 additional guest rooms and suites, a stunning new ballroom, an intimate speakeasy, and an expanded Adagio Bar—all thoughtfully designed to enhance our offerings and create even more memorable moments. Additionally, we’re curating a calendar of engaging activations and immersive experiences that will deliver the kind of unique, elevated hospitality that truly sets us apart. The best is yet to come.

Under Hopwood’s leadership, the hotel continues to set new benchmarks for boutique hospitality, blending timeless elegance with forward-thinking innovation.
Alexander Chetchikov, President of the World Luxury Chamber of Commerce, sums it up best: “Luxury is not just about opulence; it’s about storytelling, authenticity, and the ability to create meaningful experiences. Hotel Carmichael has mastered this art, and it’s no surprise that it stands as Indiana’s Best Luxury Boutique Hotel for 2025.”
